CARLSBAD — A 94-year-old local man whose life has been intertwined with a single American sports car for most of his adult life completed the final step this week to be listed in the Guinness World Records for the longest ownership of a vehicle purchased new.
From 1957 showroom to record books
Bill Hatch bought a new Chevrolet Corvette in 1957 at age 25. On Wednesday, members of the North Coast Vettes Club and other Corvette groups gathered at The Shoppes at Carlsbad to mark the certification that Hamm’s ownership, now totaling 69 years, meets Guinness’ requirements.
Hatch recalled the era when he purchased the car, a time when Elvis Presley was rising in popularity and he was early in his career as an educator. The Corvette, which he purchased instead of the 1957 Bel Air he had originally admired, cost him $3,400 at the time. Hatch had saved a $2,000 down payment and drove the vehicle home that day.
Life events tied to a car
The Corvette accompanied Hatch through decades of personal milestones. In 1962 he took his future wife, Marylyn, on their first date; the couple married nine months later. Their honeymoon, lasting four weeks, was a road trip up the California coast that included stops in Malibu, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, San Francisco and the national parks at Yosemite and Sequoia — all crisscrossed in the Corvette.
When the family grew, Hatch considered selling the Corvette but ultimately purchased a station wagon for family duties and kept the sports car. Professionally, Hatch began his teaching career in 1957 at Monrovia High School in Arcadia, where he coached three sports and earned an annual salary of $4,500.
“The Guinness Book of World Records started in 1950, the year I graduated high school,” Hatch said. “I was always curious about it. I wondered if I could be in that book.”
Value over time and community recognition
The story noted the dramatic changes in value when adjusted for inflation. Hatch’s 1957 salary would be roughly equivalent to $51,600 in 2026 dollars, and the Corvette’s original price would equate to about $39,000 today. Those comparisons underscore both the personal sacrifice and the cultural value attached to maintaining the car over seven decades.
Members of local Corvette clubs gathered to complete Guinness’ final verification step, turning a personal milestone into a community event. The celebration at The Shoppes at Carlsbad acknowledged both the individual achievement and the local car culture that supports vintage-auto stewardship.

Putting the milestone in local context
For Carlsbad, the story is a local-human-interest piece that ties personal history to the community’s ongoing interest in classic cars and preservation. The North Coast Vettes Club’s involvement highlights how hobby groups serve as local custodians of automotive heritage and help document milestones for national and international bodies such as Guinness World Records.
Hatch’s story also touches on broader themes familiar to many older residents: postwar prosperity, long careers in public service, family road trips along California’s coast and the decision to preserve an item of personal significance rather than discard it as life circumstances change. The Corvette — maintained and celebrated locally — is now also a part of the official record.
