Arkansas Tech University officials announced Thursday that fall enrollment climbed to 9,516 students, a 7% increase compared with last year, fueled in part by a record turnout at the institution's Ozark campus and stronger freshman and transfer cohorts.
Growth concentrated at Ozark campus and among new students
The ATU‑Ozark campus registered its largest headcount in university history, topping 2,669 students this semester. Campus leaders also reported a 9% jump in first-year students and an 11% uptick in transfer enrollment.
Arkansas Tech President Russell Jones attributed the uptick to affordability, investments in facilities and solid retention figures in recent years. He said the combination of campus improvements and programs designed to support students are drawing Arkansans from across the state.
"Students from across the Natural State are discovering all that Arkansas Tech University has to offer," Jones said. "Arkansas Tech emphasizes student access and affordability. We provide high-quality programs delivered by teaching scholars who know their students by name and care about them as people."
Who the new class looks like
Preliminary numbers, based on data through the 11th class day of the fall semester, show the university enrolled 1,338 freshmen this fall — the largest freshman class in three years. Arkansas residents continue to make up the vast majority of the student body at 94%.
The university also highlighted the socioeconomic and generational background of the student population: 43% are first-generation college students and 57% come from low-income households, by the university's reporting.
