Tim Pipher, an Albuquerque native who was playing golf at the Santa Rosa course, witnessed the derailment and photographed the wreckage. Pipher said he and a golf course employee were the only people on the course at the time. "I hit my ball, glanced back, and it was just a zig-zag like Tinker Toys all piled up," he said.

"There was no detectable noise when the derailment took place, but a little bit of a gas odor from a car on the train that's used to keep things cool," Pipher said.

Santa Rosa Fire Department provided at least one image of the scene to news outlets. Authorities have not released information identifying any hazardous materials or confirming the precise source of the odor described by the witness.
