The seaside town of Watchet will host its annual Summertime celebrations from Monday 17 August, organisers have announced, staging a seven-day roster of free events designed to attract families and visitors to the harbourside.
What’s on
The programme, centred on the Esplanade, pairs market stalls with continuous live entertainment and a variety of community activities. Over the course of the week the town will stage craft workshops, sea-based attractions and several family-focused highlights. Organisers say the event is shaping up to be one of the strongest in the festival’s 12-year history.
- Monday: grand opening, Esplanade market, giant Lego competition and performance by the Watchet Community Choir
- Tuesday: craft day with a seaside theme
- Wednesday: Watchet Town Council market day and day-long entertainment
- Thursday: charity stall market, Don’s Showtime featuring local musicians and a Night of Lights parade
- Friday: Watchet Boat Show with boat jumble and demonstrations from the 1st Watchet Sea Scouts and the RNLI
- Saturday: finale with stalls, hog roast, samba band and a spectacular firework display
Highlights include a children’s fun day, Punch and Judy, a retro disco and boat rides. The Thursday evening procession encourages young and old to dress in illuminated costumes or carry battery-powered lanterns for a lantern parade along the Esplanade.
Scale and appeal
Organisers expect the week to bring significant visitor numbers to the town, with the Saturday firework display alone predicted to attract in excess of 1,000 visitors and be visible from across the Bristol Channel in Wales. The mix of community-led activities and stalls has turned the event into a notable draw for tourists and local residents alike.
The festival’s format — a busy market strip, roving performers, and a fixed schedule of headline items — mirrors other successful small-town seaside festivals that rely on a blend of volunteer effort and local business participation to create a sustained visitor experience across several days.
| Day | Main attractions |
|---|---|
| Monday | Opening ceremony, market, Lego competition, community choir |
| Thursday | Charity market, Don’s Showtime, Night of Lights parade |
| Friday | Boat Show, Sea Scouts and RNLI demonstrations |
| Saturday | Finale stalls, samba band, hog roast, fireworks |
For visitors, the Esplanade’s array of stalls promises a variety of goods and food, while daytime activities are pitched at families; evening events add a theatrical and communal atmosphere that culminates in the pyrotechnic display on Saturday night.
Community and continuity
Watchet’s Summertime has built a reputation over its dozen-year run for being a low-cost, family-friendly festival that relies heavily on local organisations such as the 1st Watchet Sea Scouts and the RNLI for maritime demonstrations and safety presence. The event also supports charities through dedicated stall days and invites local musicians to take part in showcases such as Don’s Showtime.
As summer festivals across the UK compete for visitors, Watchet’s blend of traditional seaside entertainments and community involvement offers a model of how smaller towns can stage high-impact cultural weeks without major commercial sponsorship. The town will aim to capitalise on the gentle momentum built over previous years as it welcomes what organisers hope will be a capacity crowd for a celebratory weekend by the sea.
All events across the week are free to attend. Further details and timetables are being released by organisers ahead of the opening on 17 August.
