High grades and a rise in Oxbridge offers mark A Level season in Loughborough
Loughborough Schools Foundation has reported a strong set of A Level results this year, with the two senior schools — Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School — recording impressive top grades and a notable rise in Oxbridge success.
The Foundation said it had more than doubled its Oxbridge places compared with last year, with up to 14 students securing places at the universities of Oxford or Cambridge. At the Grammar and High School, pupils demonstrated depth of performance across academic and co-curricular life, the schools added.
Standout statistics from the results
Data released by the Foundation highlights particularly strong outcomes at Loughborough Grammar School, where a large share of grades sat at the top of the scale.
| School | Key figures |
|---|---|
| Loughborough Grammar School | 71% of grades A*–B; 37 students achieved three A grades or better; 12 pupils secured three or more A* grades |
| Loughborough High School | 21 students achieved three A grades or better; all three pupils holding Oxbridge offers met their grades; Joan Davis Scholar achieved A*AAA to secure a medical school place |
Voices from the Sixth Form
Pupil reactions included relief and excitement about next steps. One of the Grammar School’s successful candidates described how a narrower set of subjects in Sixth Form helped him concentrate.
“I got 3 A*s in German, Latin and Chemistry, and I’m off to the University of Oxford to study Psychology and Linguistics. I’m looking forward to meeting new people, and I think the academic side will be brilliant. Whilst studying in Sixth Form, having a smaller range of subjects meant that I’ve been able to delve deeper into each one, and that’s been really nice. The greater independence has also been really nice for me; I’ve felt a lot more freedom to approach my studies in a way that suits me, and I think that really helped me in terms of my achievements.”
The student, Joseph Ball, said he achieved three A*s in German, Latin and Chemistry and will proceed to Oxford to read Psychology and Linguistics.
Headteacher highlights contribution beyond exams
The head of Loughborough Grammar School praised the cohort not only for academic performance but for wider contributions to school life.
“I am delighted to see our students fulfil their ambitions with excellent results as they now move on to an exciting range of destinations in the UK and internationally. This year group has made an outstanding contribution to the life of Loughborough Grammar – on the sports pitch, in concert and on stage, through the Combined Cadet Force, charitable endeavours and service to the community. Their talent, energy and generosity have enriched our school immeasurably, leaving a lasting legacy. We are immensely proud of them and look forward to seeing the positive contribution they will make in the wider world.”
Mr James Neville emphasised both the academic achievements and the wider extracurricular impact the Year 13 cohort had made at the Grammar School.
What this means locally
For families, employers and the local community in Loughborough, the results underline the continuing role of the Foundation’s schools in preparing young people for selective university places and professional pathways. The increase in Oxbridge acceptances will be closely watched by parents considering sixth-form options locally, while strong performances in languages, sciences and medicine will be noted by nearby higher education and healthcare employers.
- Oxbridge places reportedly more than doubled to up to 14 offers across the Foundation.
- Grammar School recorded 71% A*–B grades, and high numbers of pupils with three top grades.
- High School secured key individual successes including medical school entry for its Joan Davis Scholar.
The Foundation encompasses both single-sex senior schools and will publish further detail about destinations and subject-level performance in due course. For pupils, parents and staff the celebrations this results season are likely to extend beyond grade tables to reflect the broader extracurricular and community contributions highlighted by staff.
Local sixth-form provision in Loughborough continues to attract national-level destinations for students; the Foundation’s outcomes this year will add to discussions about post-16 education choices across the town and the wider East Midlands region.
