Large grass fire at Mincinglake Valley Park spreads smoke across Exeter
Firefighters and conservation staff worked through Tuesday afternoon to bring a large grass fire at Mincinglake Valley Park under control after smoke was seen billowing over parts of Exeter. The blaze broke out in the Beacon Heath area shortly before 3pm, the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said, and crews warned local people to stay away from the site while they tackled the incident.
Emergency responders sectorised the scene and focused on preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent areas of the valley. Devon Wildlife Trust, which has a presence at the park, said its immediate priority was the safety of people on site and supporting the official response.
“Our immediate priority is the safety of people at the site and supporting the official response. We ask people to avoid the area and follow advice from the emergency services.”
The fire occurred against the backdrop of an intense heatwave and worsening drought across much of England. Authorities have repeatedly warned that dry conditions make vegetation more prone to ignition and that fires can spread rapidly in parks, grassland and woodland.
Advice to residents and wider context
As crews worked at Mincinglake, officials advised nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed to limit smoke ingress. The fire service also asked the public to steer clear of the area to allow firefighters to operate safely and without obstruction.

National drought and local risk
The Mincinglake incident comes while national bodies report rapidly worsening moisture shortages. Officials said that nearly three-quarters of England are now in drought status following the driest July in 190 years. The National Drought Group recently assessed that around 45 million people live in affected areas.
Forecasters reported that August had so far seen only about 5 per cent of the expected rainfall for the month in some areas and predicted high temperatures, with readings up to 36C expected in parts of the country. Those conditions leave grass, scrub and woodland tinder-dry and place a premium on careful behaviour in public open spaces.
Devon Wildlife Trust emphasised that the safety of people at the site and supporting the official response were its priorities. The fire service reiterated its request that people avoid the affected areas while crews continue to work to contain the blazes.
Residents concerned about smoke should follow guidance from emergency services and consider closing windows and doors until the situation is declared safe. Local people with mobility or respiratory issues may wish to take extra care during periods of smoke.
Further updates will come from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and local authorities as the response continues and the extent of any ecological damage is assessed.
