Two youths drown at Talaja check dam; locals and firefighters recover bodies
Two teenagers drowned on Sunday morning at a check dam in Mathavada village of Talaja taluka in Bhavnagar district while attempting to rescue friends who had got into difficulty, the Alang Marine police station said. The victims have been identified as Tushar Shiyal (17) and Milan Shiyal (19), according to the police statement cited in PTI reporting.
The incident occurred at about 10.30 am when a group of four friends was picnicking at the check dam. Two members of the group began to drown, and Tushar and Milan tried to pull them to safety. While the two people in immediate danger were rescued, Tushar and Milan themselves could not be saved and drowned, the official said.
"At 10.30 am, two members of the group started drowning. Their friends Tushar Shiyal (17) and Milan Shiyal (19) tried to rescue them. While the two others were saved, Tushar and Milan drowned," an Alang Marine police official said, according to PTI.
Villagers and local firefighters assisted in recovering the bodies, police added. The matter is being handled by Alang Marine police station; further procedural steps including medico-legal formalities and informing next of kin were said to be underway in line with standard practice, the PTI report noted.
Local context and safety concerns
Check dams in coastal and rural Bhavnagar serve multiple purposes—recharging groundwater, storing water for irrigation and acting as catchments during the monsoon. However, they can present hazards when water levels are unexpectedly deep, currents form or submerged structures create unseen risks. Picnic visits by local youth to such water bodies are common, particularly during weekends and holidays, raising recurring questions about public awareness and supervision.
- Location: Mathavada village, Talaja taluka, Bhavnagar district.
- Time: About 10.30 am on Sunday.
- Victims: Tushar Shiyal (17) and Milan Shiyal (19).
- Response: Bodies recovered by villagers and firefighters; case handled by Alang Marine police station.
The deaths underline the need for improved public information and precautionary measures around rural water-storage structures. Local panchayats and district authorities periodically issue advisories during monsoon and post-monsoon periods, but enforcement at isolated check dams is often sporadic. Bhavnagar district, with its mix of coastal stretches, industrial zones such as Alang and numerous rural hamlets, faces a challenge in ensuring uniform safety messaging and rapid emergency response across diverse terrain.
Emergency response and community role
This incident again highlights the first-responder role that villagers often play in rural Gujarat. In many such cases, immediate help from neighbours and local volunteers is crucial in locating and retrieving victims before formal emergency services arrive. Fire department personnel, when mobilised, bring equipment and trained personnel for recovery operations, but reaching remote water bodies can cost precious time.

Authorities typically examine such incidents to determine whether negligence, unsafe access points, lack of signage, or absence of barriers contributed to the fatalities. While the immediate facts reported by police clarify what happened, determining systemic remedies will require follow-up by the district administration and local bodies. Preventive measures used elsewhere include signboards warning of deep water, seasonal fencing, community watch during peak hours and school-level safety education about water hazards.
The deaths have cast a pall over Mathavada and neighbouring villages in Talaja taluka. Local officials and civic agencies in Bhavnagar district are expected to review safety measures at check dams to prevent similar tragedies, while police complete formalities and notify families, according to the PTI account.
