Fatal overnight crash near Bassian; two passengers survive

LUDHIANA — Three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) functionaries were killed after the car they were travelling in plunged into a roadside pond near Bassian village on the Ludhiana–Raikot road past midnight on Thursday, police said.

Police identified the deceased as Sandeep Singh, Balkar Singh and Vishal Garg. Two other occupants, Bikramjit Singh and Puneet Goyal, survived the mishap and were initially taken to Raikot civil hospital before being referred to hospitals in Ludhiana for further treatment and observation, according to official information.

  • The vehicle involved was a Volkswagen Jetta, carrying five men returning from Nakodar in Jalandhar.
  • Police said the sedan lost control on a turn near Bassian village and plunged into a roadside pond around 1 am.
  • Locals pulled the occupants out; three were pronounced dead and two were hospitalised.

Officials indicated the crash appears to have been precipitated by a sudden obstruction on the road.

"Police are scanning CCTV footage in the area to establish the exact reason behind the mishap,"
said Inspector Heera Singh, SHO at Sadar Raikot police station, according to the report. He added that the surviving occupants were traumatised and not yet fit to record statements.

Background of the victims and immediate response

Authorities said the three deceased were young men, aged between 27 and 32. Sandeep Singh was identified as the deputy district president of AAP in Patiala and was driving the car. The victims' places of residence were reported as Patiala, Dirba in Sangrur and neighbouring areas.

Emergency responders and local residents were first on the scene and assisted with rescue efforts. The bodies were moved to civil hospitals in Jagraon and Ludhiana for post-mortem examinations to ascertain the precise cause of death, police said.

Jagraon MLA Sarvjit Kaur Manuke visited the families of the deceased and expressed condolences, calling the deaths a significant loss for the AAP, the report stated.

Investigation and safety concerns

Inspector Heera Singh said investigators were reviewing available CCTV footage and other evidence from the stretch to determine factors that led to the vehicle going off the road. The statement to police noted a possible role of a stray animal suddenly appearing on the road, which may have caused the driver to lose control, but investigators have not concluded the probe.

The crash has raised renewed concerns about night-time road safety on regional routes linking Ludhiana with neighbouring districts. Local residents and commuters frequently use the Ludhiana–Raikot corridor; inadequate lighting, sharp turns and the presence of animals or slow-moving vehicles are recurrent hazards on such stretches, safety advocates say.

Name Residence (reported) Status
Sandeep Singh Atala village (Patiala district) Deceased
Balkar Singh Rongla village (Dirba, Sangrur) Deceased
Vishal Garg Dhaula Patti (Dirba) Deceased
Bikramjit Singh Burar village (Patiala) Injured, alive
Puneet Goyal Patran (Patiala) Injured, alive

Police have not yet filed any final report on culpability. They said further medical reports, post-mortem findings and CCTV analysis would guide next steps in the investigation. The survivors remain under medical care in Ludhiana hospitals and their statements will be recorded once they are fit to do so.

Community and political reaction

The deaths drew prompt attention from regional leaders. The presence of a party office-bearer among the deceased and the fact that the group was returning from a visit to Nakodar have added a political dimension to the local response, with party colleagues mourning the loss and appealing for assistance to the bereaved families.

Local road-safety activists said the incident underlined the need for better signage, improved lighting on rural stretches and measures to prevent animals from straying onto busy roads at night. Authorities have been urged to accelerate safety audits on the Ludhiana–Raikot route to prevent similar tragedies.

As the probe continues, police appealed to motorists and commuters to exercise caution on the stretch at night and to report any CCTV or eyewitness material that could help the investigation.
