Intoxicated driver crashes into crowd near Maharaj Bada; bystanders detain him
GWALIOR: Seven pedestrians were injured after a speeding car driven by an allegedly intoxicated man rammed into people and vehicles on a busy road near Maharaj Bada on the night of Independence Day, police said. The accused was detained by bystanders and later taken into custody by the Kotwali police, officials added.
The incident occurred between 10 and 11 pm on Saturday on the stretch from Roxy Bridge to Maharaj Bada, within the Kotwali police station area, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck several two-wheelers and people standing nearby, according to the police statement. Four two-wheelers were reported damaged and seven pedestrians sustained injuries.
"Seven people sustained injuries in this incident. The driver was heavily drunk and a liquor bottle was also found inside his car. A case has been registered against the accused under the Motor Vehicles Act as well as various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita," Kotwali Station In-charge Vinay Karkare said.
Immediate response and hospitalisation
Bystanders at the scene intervened, stopped the vehicle and apprehended the driver before he could flee, further police records said. The injured were taken to hospital in ambulances and private vehicles. A Kotwali police team reached the spot after being informed and arrested the accused.
The arrest and registration of a case under the Motor Vehicles Act and provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita indicate that the police are treating the matter as both a traffic violation and a criminal offence. Investigations are continuing, officials said, to determine the exact sequence of events that led the car to veer into the crowd.
Local concerns: enforcement and dry-day questions
The episode has prompted local concern about enforcement of traffic safety and liquor regulations. Police noted that a bottle of liquor was recovered from the vehicle. Questions have also been raised about how the driver obtained alcohol on a day that had been designated a dry day for Independence Day.
Residents and traders in the Maharaj Bada area, one of Gwalior’s busiest marketplaces, said the incident created panic and interrupted Independence Day commemorations in parts of the old city. The market draws large footfall, especially on festivals and public holidays, increasing the potential for mass casualties when traffic incidents occur.
Implications for urban safety and policing
Traffic collisions involving intoxicated drivers in dense market areas highlight two intersecting enforcement challenges: restricting drunk driving and managing vehicle flow in pedestrian-heavy zones. Kotwali station authorities have initiated an inquiry to ascertain whether speeding, driver negligence, vehicle defects or other factors contributed to the crash.
Local traders have urged stricter surveillance and traffic calming measures near Maharaj Bada, recommending increased police patrolling and barriers during peak hours and public events to prevent vehicles from entering densely crowded stretches.
