Two schoolgirls found hanging in Chilkan; one dies, other survives
Saharanpur — A Class 11 student allegedly died by suicide on Thursday after she and a friend were found hanging at a house in the Chilkan area of Saharanpur district, police said. The second girl survived because the noose around her neck came loose and she was admitted to hospital, officials added.
Sadar Circle Officer Vikas Pratap Singh Chauhan said the suspected suicide appears to be connected to a dispute over a love affair involving one of the girls and a local youth, but the police are investigating all angles.
“The matter appears to be related to a dispute over a love affair. Further legal action will be taken on the basis of the family’s complaint and the post-mortem report,” said Chauhan.
Police said both girls left their homes for school but did not reach the institution. Families later discovered that one of the students was allegedly in a relationship with a local youth and had gone to his house accompanied by her friend. Neighbours entered the house after repeated knocks went unanswered and found the two girls hanging, the police said.
Investigation steps under way
On receiving information, police and forensic teams reached the spot to collect evidence. The body of the deceased girl was sent for post-mortem examination. Officers said they are questioning schoolmates and local residents as part of the probe.
Chauhan indicated that further legal action will depend on the outcome of the post-mortem and any formal complaint lodged by the family. No arrests were reported immediately, and the identity of the local youth alleged to be involved was not disclosed in initial statements.
Local context and potential consequences
The incident comes amid growing concern over adolescent mental health and the vulnerability of school-age children in the district. If the connection to a love affair is confirmed, police and district officials may examine whether a criminal offence such as abetment to suicide or an offence under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act is made out, depending on the age of the parties and the facts established by the investigation.

Officials urged restraint and cautioned against speculation while the probe proceeds. They said that investigations will aim to establish motive and the precise sequence of events that led to the deaths and injuries.
District authorities have in the past highlighted the need for community-level counselling and closer monitoring of adolescent behaviour to prevent such tragedies. Mental-health experts and school officials frequently recommend early intervention, parental engagement and accessible counselling services for students, though it was not immediately reported whether such support was in place for the two girls.
As the inquiry develops, police asked anyone with information about the case or the movements of the girls on the morning in question to come forward to assist the investigation.
