Itanagar/Roing, Sep 23: Arunachal Pradesh Police have identified the vehicle allegedly used in the assault on Sikkimese rapper Ugen Namgyal Bhutia (UNB) and one individual suspected of involvement in the attack, a senior officer said on Wednesday.
Investigation status and challenges
Lower Dibang Valley Superintendent of Police Ringu Ngupok said the role of the identified person "needs to be confirmed" as investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events. Police are also working to identify other persons who may have taken part in the incident.
The assault occurred on Monday evening near Tiwari Gaon in Lower Dibang Valley district while UNB and his team were travelling towards Roing after performing at a concert in Anini, Dibang Valley district.
According to police accounts, two vehicles followed the rapper's car for nearly an hour before intercepting it on a secluded stretch of road about 39 km from Roing. The attackers are alleged to have damaged UNB's vehicle with a rod and assaulted him and his manager before fleeing the scene when a truck approached.
"We have identified one individual whom we suspect, but it needs to be confirmed," SP Ringu Ngupok said.
Police said UNB sustained injuries to his head and face and had swelling around one eye. The remoteness of the location and absent mobile network coverage have complicated the probe, the SP added.
Security measures and ongoing procedures
Roing police have deployed personnel at multiple locations while carrying out technical analysis as part of the investigation. Ngupok rejected reports that the case would be handed over to a Special Investigation Team, saying the Roing police were conducting a thorough inquiry.
"There is no question of transferring the case to an SIT at this stage. Roing police are looking into the case thoroughly and we will see the end of the case," the SP said.
Possible motive examined
Police confirmed they were examining possible motives, including reports of a professional rivalry between UNB and Arunachal Pradesh-based rapper Don Kam. Authorities emphasised that motive remains under investigation and has not been established conclusively.
Local context and implications
Violent incidents on isolated stretches of road pose particular challenges in districts like Lower Dibang Valley, where terrain, sparse settlements and patchy communications can delay reporting and response. The case has drawn attention because it involves a visiting artist and took place after a public cultural event, raising concerns among performers and organisers about safety on inter-district routes in the state.
Security sources said investigators will rely on a mix of eyewitness statements, technical analysis of vehicle movements and any available CCTV or dashcam footage from the route to corroborate timelines. Police also plan to question attendees at the Anini concert and persons who might have seen the vehicles prior to the interception.

Next steps and community concerns
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist the investigation. Residents and performers in the region have expressed unease about attacks on artists travelling between remote districts. Local authorities may consider stepped-up patrolling on festival and concert itineraries if threats to touring artists are substantiated.
The probe remains active and police said they will provide further updates as evidence is verified and additional persons are identified. For now, officials emphasise the need to confirm the suspected individual's connection to the assault before any formal charges are framed.
