GONDA: A schoolgirl was intercepted at the entry of the district jail here on Thursday after prison staff discovered 10 live pistol/revolver cartridges in her bag, along with a suspect Aadhaar card and cash, officials said. The minor, who had arrived to meet an undertrial, was handed over to Nagar Kotwali police and an inquiry launched into the source of the ammunition and the authenticity of the identity document.
Entry checks and identity mismatch
According to jail authorities, the intermediate-level student reached the jail premises at about 2 pm for a scheduled meeting in the second visiting shift. While processing her entry, officials found discrepancies between the details she provided and those on the records. Her responses during verification further raised suspicion, prompting a female warder to conduct a search between the first and second security gates.
The search yielded 10 live cartridges from the girl's bag, besides cash and an Aadhaar card bearing the name "Vaishnavi", the administration said. She had earlier given a different name to the jail staff. The jail administration prevented her from entering the facility and immediately handed her over to the local police along with the recovered items.
Police probe and lines of inquiry
Jailor Aftab Ahmed Ansari confirmed that a meeting slip had been submitted listing two visitors for an undertrial and that the girl was scheduled in the second visiting slot. He said the identity discrepancy prompted additional checks which led to the discovery of the ammunition. Following formal handover, Nagar Kotwali police took the minor into custody for further questioning.
Police are examining the provenance of the Aadhaar card and whether it is genuine or forged. Investigators are also verifying the girl's claim, reportedly made during questioning, that her father is a practising advocate who holds a licensed firearm and that she had removed the cartridges from that weapon without informing the family because she feared their reaction to her relationship and to her visit to the jail.
Authorities said they will check the firearm licence and ammunition records to establish whether the recovered cartridges match any registered holdings. The verification will include cross-referencing the licence details, if any, and the records of legally held ammunition maintained with relevant authorities.
Security procedures and the larger issue
The incident draws attention to two separate but related concerns: the possibility of minors gaining access to ammunition and the misuse of identity documents to visit inmates. Jail authorities emphasised that standard verification procedures at the entry point prevented a potentially serious breach of security.
- Items recovered: 10 live pistol/revolver cartridges, a printed Aadhaar card bearing the name "Vaishnavi", cash and other materials.
- Immediate action: Girl prevented from entering jail, handed to Nagar Kotwali police for questioning.
- Investigations: Authenticity of Aadhaar and source of ammunition to be verified; firearm licence and ammunition records to be checked.

Legal experts note that unauthorised possession of live ammunition, particularly by a minor, can attract serious criminal charges under the Arms Act and related provisions. Police will determine whether the cartridges were lawfully held under a licensed firearm and whether any offences have been committed in procuring or carrying the ammunition.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any case under the Arms Act or provisions related to forgery or identity fraud has been registered; the investigation is ongoing and will determine the exact legal course. The juvenile status of the girl will also shape any proceeding and will involve provisions of the juvenile justice system where applicable.
The episode has prompted the jail administration to review its visitor verification process, officials said, with a view to tightening checks and preventing recurrence. Local police said they will also probe the circumstances that allowed a minor to be in possession of live ammunition and are examining the family and household records as part of the ongoing enquiry.
Further updates are expected as the Nagar Kotwali police complete forensic checks on the recovered cartridges and the Aadhaar document, and as they question the girl and relevant family members.
