Chief Minister visits camps as River Haora flows above danger level
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday evening toured several flood-affected pockets of Agartala and inspected relief arrangements as the Central Water Commission (CWC) issued a severe flood alert for the Haora river after it rose above the prescribed danger mark.
The Chief Minister visited areas around Ashram Chowmuhani in West Tripura and the relief facility set up at Vivekananda School, Bardowali, where families displaced by recent heavy rains have taken shelter. He interacted with those living at the camp, reviewed the facilities and assured them of administrative support.
"Visited the flood-affected areas near Ashram Chowmuhani in West Tripura district following the incessant rainfall. I also met people taking shelter at Vivekananda School in Bardowali and took stock of their situation, assuring them of all necessary administrative assistance," the Chief Minister posted on X.
The CWC’s flood forecast reported that the Haora at the Haora monitoring point in West Tripura was flowing at 10.72m at 0800 hrs, which is 0.02m above the danger level of 10.70m. The agency classified the situation as a severe flood with a rising trend, prompting its alert message to central and national disaster agencies.
| Location | Water level (m) | Danger level (m) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haora (West Tripura) | 10.72 | 10.70 | Above danger — severe flood |
Officials said the administration is monitoring the situation closely and reviewing relief measures in the affected pockets of the state capital. During his visits, the Chief Minister examined the condition of displaced residents and sought reports from local officials on the adequacy of shelter, food and medical arrangements.
Relief camps have been set up to accommodate families who evacuated their homes. At the Bardowali camp in Vivekananda School, displaced residents are being provided shelter while authorities assess immediate needs. The Chief Minister’s inspection included a review of the facilities available to those taking refuge there.
- Area visited: Ashram Chowmuhani and Bardowali (Vivekananda School relief camp).
- Alert issued by: Central Water Commission — Haora in severe flood situation.
- Key measurement: Haora level 10.72m at 0800 hrs, 0.02m above danger level.
With the Haora reported to be on a rising trend, flood forecasting and monitoring remain central to the administration’s response. Local authorities typically rely on periodic CWC bulletins to guide decisions on evacuations, road closures and deployment of relief resources. Residents in low-lying areas are usually advised to stay informed through official channels until the river recedes to safe levels.
During the visit the Chief Minister reiterated that the government was working to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected and that necessary administrative measures would be taken to provide support. He reviewed on-ground arrangements and directed officials to keep relief services operational as required.
For the public, authorities usually recommend the following precautions when rivers approach or exceed danger levels:
- Follow instructions from local administration and evacuation orders where issued.
- Avoid movement in flooded areas and do not attempt to wade or drive through fast-flowing water.
- Keep updated through official social media handles, local radio and district administration advisories.
State and district agencies will continue to monitor river gauges and weather updates. The CWC’s hydrograph and bulletins will be used to assess changes in river behaviour and to guide further relief and safety measures in Agartala and surrounding areas.
