Police register FIR, form SIT as family protests at school
The family of a five-year-old nursery pupil staged a protest outside a private school in Rohtak after alleging the child was sexually assaulted on the school premises, officials said on Thursday. An FIR under relevant sections of the POCSO Act has been registered and a special investigation team (SIT) constituted, the superintendent of police, Gaurav Rajpurohit, said.
According to the police, the allegations came to light when the girl returned home from school on Tuesday and her mother noticed her "serious condition" while changing the child's clothes. The family said the child told them someone had taken her to the school toilet. Recognising the gravity of the situation, the family first took the girl to a private hospital where treating doctors suspected sexual assault and referred her to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, for further evaluation and treatment.
- FIR: Registered against an unidentified person under relevant sections of the POCSO Act.
- Investigation: SIT formed; CCTV and other technical evidence being analysed by Lakhan Majra police station.
- Counselling: Child expert counsellors and doctors are providing psychological support to the victim.
Police personnel from Lakhan Majra police station reached the school after the family staged the protest and began examining available CCTV footage. The family accused the school management of withholding information and demanded access to surveillance recordings from the premises.
"At present, no concrete clue regarding the accused has been found," said SP Gaurav Rajpurohit, adding it was not immediately clear whether the alleged incident involved another student, a member of the school staff or an outsider.
What officials say and next steps in the probe
Rajpurohit said investigators are analysing CCTV footage and other technical evidence closely. He also confirmed that the FIR was filed on the basis of the victim's mother's statement and emphasised that the case was being treated with seriousness. The SIT will continue evidence collection and follow standard procedures for medico-legal examination and statements under the POCSO framework.
Counselling and medical assessment are ongoing. Police said the child had not provided any clear information about the accused during initial interactions; information obtained through professional counselling and assessment by experts will be incorporated into the investigation.

The police stressed that enquiries are ongoing to determine whether the alleged perpetrator is a fellow student, a school employee or an outsider. No arrests had been reported at the time the police brief was issued. Investigators will also seek formal statements from school management, staff and any witnesses captured on CCTV as part of the probe.
Legal provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act mandate special procedures for recording statements and conducting medical examinations in alleged offences involving minors. The police said they would follow those procedures and work with medical and counselling professionals to ensure the child's welfare while progressing the criminal inquiry.
Residents and parents in Rohtak watching the case closely are likely to seek clarity on school safety protocols, supervision in pre-primary classes and transparency around incident reporting and CCTV access. The police appeal to anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist the investigation.
