Sambhal, Aug 15: An eight-year-old boy died and two other children were injured after a school porch collapsed when they climbed onto it to watch Independence Day celebrations at Al-Hasan Public School in Madala Fatehpur village, police said on Saturday.

Incident and immediate response

The incident took place shortly after the flag-hoisting ceremony at the school in Sambhal tehsil, according to district police. Children from nearby homes had gathered to watch the programme and climbed onto the porch above the school's main gate. The structure gave way under the weight, trapping three children beneath the debris.

Police identified the deceased as Nizam, 8, son of Naeem. The two injured children — Saif Ali, 11, and Shaidana, 10 — were rushed to hospital and are undergoing treatment, officials said.

District Magistrate Ankit Khandelwal and the Superintendent of Police visited the site for an inspection and issued necessary instructions, the police added. The family of the deceased refused to have his post-mortem examination conducted, police said.

Local impact and safety concerns

The collapse drew immediate attention to the safety of temporary and permanent structures used during public and school events. Independence Day gatherings across towns and villages often attract residents beyond the student body, increasing loads on verandahs, porches and terraces that may not be designed for large crowds.

  • Casualties: Three children trapped; one killed, two injured.
  • Officials on site: District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police conducted an inspection.
  • Post-mortem: Family declined the post-mortem of the deceased child.

What authorities have done

Police said necessary instructions were issued following the inspection. No further details were available immediately about compensation, FIRs or action against the school management. Officials typically examine structural integrity, obtain witness statements and determine whether negligence contributed to such incidents before deciding on legal or administrative steps.

Context and precautions for future gatherings

Public functions held at schools and community centres frequently attract spectators beyond the immediate participants. Local administrations and school authorities share responsibility to assess and cordon off areas not meant to carry crowd loads, ensure safe viewing points and, where necessary, deploy personnel to manage onlookers. Engineers and civic agencies advise that load-bearing surfaces be evaluated periodically, particularly before large events.

In Sambhal and other districts, tragedies during festivities and ceremonies have prompted calls for stricter enforcement of building safety norms and for awareness drives among schools and organisers. Authorities often follow up such incidents with structural assessments and directives to repair or restrict use of unsafe spaces.

Police said an inquiry into the Sambhal collapse is under way. Further details, including any administrative action or compensation to the victim’s family, were expected after the investigation and hospital reports are completed.

The incident underscored the vulnerability of makeshift viewing arrangements at public events and the need for clear protocols to prevent overcrowding on structures not designed for large numbers.
