Two young people seriously injured after single-vehicle rollover in Pickering
Two people suffered serious injuries early on Aug. 14 when a Nissan sedan left the roadway and rolled near the intersection of Altona Road and Kingston Road in Pickering, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) confirmed.
Police, fire and emergency medical crews from West Division responded at approximately 2:05 a.m. Officers arriving at the scene located the sedan flipped on its side and found two occupants trapped. Both were extricated from the vehicle by emergency services and transported to Toronto-area trauma centres.
The passenger, an 18-year-old, was taken with life-threatening injuries. The driver, also 18, was transported with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the DRPS statement. The collision remains under investigation by the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit.

Local context and consequences
The crash occurred in a mixed residential and commercial corridor that connects central Pickering to parts of Ajax and Durham Region. Kingston Road is a busy arterial route carrying local traffic as well as commuters travelling east-west through the municipality. Any serious collision on these roads can quickly lead to multi-hour closures, affecting morning commutes and the movement of emergency vehicles.
The involvement of two 18-year-olds highlights ongoing public-safety concerns about young drivers. In Ontario, collisions involving young drivers are often linked by police and road-safety advocates to factors such as inexperience, speed, distracted driving and impaired driving. Police have not confirmed any charges in this incident; their investigation will examine mechanical condition, road conditions, driver behaviour and whether alcohol played a role.
For neighbours and local businesses near Altona and Kingston, the immediate consequence was the road closure and police presence while investigators worked. Residents reported seeing emergency lights and crews at the scene overnight; traffic diversions remained in place until evidence collection was complete.
How the investigation proceeds
The Collision Investigation Unit will compile physical evidence, statements and any available video footage. Police requested footage from dash cams, doorbell cameras and commercial surveillance systems that might have captured the vehicle before or during the incident. Officers will also examine the vehicle itself and the roadway for skid marks, debris and other indicators of speed or loss of control.

For Pickering residents, this incident is a sober reminder of the risks on local roads, particularly during overnight hours. Police are urging anyone with relevant footage or information to come forward to assist the investigation.
