WESTPORT, N.L. — A fishing trip ended in tragedy on Wednesday when a small boat capsized near the wharf in Westport on the Baie Verte Peninsula, leaving one man dead and a tight-knit community reeling.

Town clerk and volunteer firefighter Christine Murphy — who also made the 911 call — said she was alerted to an overturned boat sometime between about 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The vessel was reportedly only a few hundred feet from shore.
"When we got [to the wharf] there was ... a lot of fishermen in the water in their boats. They were just out looking," Murphy said, describing the initial scene as neighbours and fellow fish harvesters searched before official responders arrived.
