Suspect arrested after online video alleged to target Jewish community
The Waterloo Regional Police Service says a 33-year-old Kitchener man has been charged after officers investigated an online livestream that allegedly contained threats and antisemitic comments directed at members of the Jewish community.
Police were notified of the livestream over the weekend and subsequently executed a search of a residence in Kitchener, where a suspect was arrested, the service said. He is charged with uttering threats to cause death, a charge the police have identified as hate motivated.
The matter is being handled by WRPS’ General Investigations Unit, which said the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact police at 519-570-9777, ext. 4496.
Community reaction and context
Local Jewish leaders described the alleged threats as jarring for a community that has recently felt heightened concern about antisemitic incidents. Rabbi Moshe Goldman, director of Waterloo’s Rohr Chabad Centre for Jewish Life, told CBC News he was grateful police and national agencies took the video seriously and acted.
"I'm just impressed and grateful for local law enforcement, national law enforcement, intelligence agencies, all the parties involved did really an incredible job, to pick this up and take it seriously as they should," Goldman said. "We have to take every threat seriously. And thank God, this was hopefully averted, but we have to remain vigilant. There will be another one."
The CBC report that first described the arrest also referenced other incidents and threats that have been reported nationally and locally in recent weeks, underscoring broader concerns among faith communities and post-secondary institutions.

Local consequences and watchfulness
For Kitchener residents, the incident serves as a reminder of the way online platforms can be used to disseminate hate and threats into local communities. Police said they acted after receiving notification of the livestream, a process that involved both search and arrest at a Kitchener residence.
Local community organisations have been urged to remain vigilant and to report threatening content or behaviour to law enforcement. The charge laid in this case — uttering threats to cause death with a hate-motivation designation — carries significant legal consequences and signals that investigators are treating alleged bias or prejudice as an aggravating factor in criminal behaviour.
