Police say human remains were discovered in a section of Gatineau Park in Chelsea on Wednesday evening, prompting the closure of the park's P16 Meech Creek Valley parking lot and several nearby trails while investigators search the area.
How the discovery unfolded
The MRC des Collines‑de‑l'Outaouais police service said a park user found bones beside a trail at about 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers attended and, with the assistance of police dogs, began searching the surrounding terrain.
"It's not unusual for us to get a call like that because we live in the country and there's lots of animals, so normally it's related to bones from animals ... We sent an officer there and we were able very quickly to establish that it was human remains," said Sgt. Martin Fournel of the MRC des Collines police.
Police have not said whether the remains are connected to a crime or an existing missing‑person file. Investigators described the discovery as under examination and indicated there is no known threat to public safety at this time.
Park areas closed
The National Capital Commission, which manages Gatineau Park, confirmed the following closures until further notice:
- Parking lot P16 (Meech Creek Valley) on chemin Pine
- Trail 45
- Trail 36 (from Trail 50 to Trail 36b)
- Trail 47
- Trail 50 (from P16 to Trail 36)
The NCC added that visitors can instead use P11 to access the Carbide Willson ruins.
