New faces join Hamilton’s coaching staff as team builds for first PWHL season
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) franchise in Hamilton has taken its first concrete step in building a coaching bench for the club’s inaugural 2026-27 season, announcing the hires of Chelsea Walkland and Connor James as assistant coaches to head coach Kris Sparre.
The appointments, disclosed in a team release on Tuesday, add two coaches with contrasting backgrounds: one with experience developing elite young female players and international junior teams, the other with a long professional playing career and skills-coaching experience in Halton Region.
Coaching backgrounds and responsibilities
Chelsea Walkland comes to Hamilton after leading the U19 women’s hockey program at Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, N.Y. Her résumé includes assistant coaching positions at Colgate University and Robert Morris University. She has also worked on the international stage, serving as an assistant coach for the United States at the 2022 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship and acting as head coach for the 2023 Collegiate Select Series matchup against Canada.
Connor James brings a different mix of playing and coaching experience. Selected by Los Angeles in the ninth round of the 2002 NHL draft, James played 16 games in the NHL with the Kings and the Pittsburgh Penguins across a 16-year professional career. More recently he worked as a skills coach with Shield Athletics, a hockey development and therapy organisation based in Burlington, Ont., and coached within the Burlington Eagles AAA program. He also represented Canada three times at the Deutschland Cup.

What the hires mean for Hamilton hockey
The pair’s appointments signal the franchise is aiming to blend player development expertise with high-level professional experience. Walkland’s background with collegiate programs and international U18 competition suggests a focus on nurturing younger talent and bridging the pipeline from junior and collegiate ranks to the professional level. James’ on-ice experience and local development work in Burlington may be especially valuable in skills training and integrating players into the club’s systems.
For Hamilton, which is positioning itself as a centre for professional women’s hockey in Ontario, staffing decisions will shape the on-ice identity fans will see in the first season. The PWHL’s move into Hamilton has generated interest across the region; the hires of coaches who are familiar with North American collegiate pathways and with Ontario’s development circuits could help the club attract and foster domestic talent.
How Sparre uses Walkland’s and James’ differing strengths — Walkland’s international and collegiate coaching pedigree and James’ pro playing and local development experience — will be a storyline to watch as the organisation completes its roster and prepares for training camp.
With the regular season still months away, the additions are an early indication of the club’s priorities: establishing a coaching core that can develop players and compete immediately. Further staff announcements and player signings are expected as Hamilton moves toward its inaugural season.
For Hamilton fans, these hires mark the beginning of a tangible build that will transform abstract excitement into a team to support at arenas across the city and region.
