Police name parkette as scene of May assault, seek help identifying suspect
Hamilton police have released images of a man they want to speak to in connection with an assault in late May that resulted in the death of an adult male weeks later.
Officers were called about a person suffering a serious head injury near Wentworth Street North and Bristol Street on the morning of May 31. Investigators later determined the incident occurred at Pinky Lewis Parkette, 169 Sandford Ave. N., a small green space adjacent to Mission Services, Cathy Weaver Elementary School and the Norman "Pinky" Lewis Recreation Centre.
Police say the injured man was taken to hospital and subsequently died. News outlets differ slightly on the hospital timeline: one report states the man died on July 30, while another indicates he remained in hospital until Aug. 1, when police ruled the death a homicide. The victim’s name has not been released at the family's request.
What police say about the suspect
Authorities have circulated photographs and a description of a man they believe was involved. He is described as a Black male of medium build and was last seen wearing all white — a white T-shirt, white shorts and a white bucket-style hat.
Detectives told reporters they believe the individual frequents the Tim Hortons at 505 Cannon St. E. Anyone with information about his identity or whereabouts has been asked to contact investigators directly.
"The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives continue to pursue several investigative avenues,"
police said in a news release.

Local context and concerns
Pinky Lewis Parkette sits in a mixed residential and service corridor of central Hamilton. The parkette's proximity to a shelter and elementary school underlines community concerns about safety in public spaces that serve vulnerable residents and children. Local agencies and families in the area told reporters they are anxious for clarity about what happened and for measures that could prevent similar incidents.
Hamilton has grappled with public-safety challenges around its downtown and near-downtown neighbourhoods over recent years, with community groups and city staff frequently discussing the need for better co-ordination among policing, social services and outreach providers to address violence that sometimes occurs in public green spaces and near service agencies.
Investigation status and next steps
Police say detectives continue to follow several lines of inquiry. While images of a man believed to be connected to the assault were released to the public, no arrests have been announced. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Duma at 905-546-4863 or to provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
