SIU invoked after early-morning single-vehicle crash in Guelph/Eramosa
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a single-vehicle collision in Guelph/Eramosa late on Sunday that followed an attempted traffic stop by the Wellington County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.
According to a news release from Wellington County OPP, members attempted to stop a vehicle shortly after 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, in the Guelph/Eramosa Township area. The vehicle did not stop and police officers subsequently disengaged. The vehicle was later located after it had been involved in a single-vehicle collision.
All five occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital for assessment. The OPP confirmed that three people were confirmed to have sustained injuries; the release did not provide details on the severity of those injuries or on the identities of those involved.
The OPP notified the SIU, which then invoked its mandate to lead the investigation. Under that process, the OPP said it will be unable to provide further information while the SIU conducts its work.
"Any media inquiries related to the SIU investigation should be directed to SIU Communications at siu.media@ontario.ca."
Invoking the SIU mandate means the province’s civilian oversight agency, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault, will determine next steps and whether any officers’ conduct is under review. The OPP’s statement did not specify whether any officers were involved physically in the collision or whether police vehicles made contact with the private vehicle prior to the crash.
Residents in Guelph and surrounding townships often watch closely when provincial investigators become involved in policing matters. The SIU’s involvement typically restricts public statements from police while evidence is collected and interviews are arranged by the civilian investigators. For this incident, the OPP specifically directed media enquiries to the SIU communications address provided in the release.
