An early-morning passenger bus rollover on Highway 17, about 25 kilometres north of Wawa, left 17 people in hospital and triggered an Ontario Provincial Police investigation that resulted in a charge against the driver, police said Tuesday.
What happened
Officers were dispatched shortly before 7 a.m. after reports that a bus had rolled onto its side and come to rest in a roadside ditch, the OPP said in a release. Multiple passengers reported injuries and emergency responders attended the scene. All 17 people who were taken to hospital were treated for minor injuries and have since been released.
Following their investigation, police charged the bus driver with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. The OPP did not provide the driver’s name or offer additional details about the circumstances that led to the crash.
Response and ongoing work
OPP remained on site as crews worked to remove the vehicle from the ditch. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dash-cam footage that could assist the probe to contact the Superior East Wawa OPP.
- Time: Shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday
- Location: Highway 17, about 25 km north of Wawa, Ont.
- Injuries: 17 people taken to hospital with minor injuries; all released
- Charge: Careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act
How the charge is defined
Under the Highway Traffic Act, a careless driving charge can be laid when a driver operates a vehicle without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the highway. Conviction can lead to fines, licence consequences and demerit points depending on the case and any resulting harm. The charge in this incident reflects the OPP’s view that the driver’s conduct on the road warranted a formal enforcement response; it does not determine guilt, which will be addressed through the courts.
Local context: Highway 17 and northern road risks
Highway 17 is a principal east-west corridor through northern Ontario and is routinely used by commercial and passenger vehicles. Weather in the region can change quickly and stretches of the route are remote, with limited immediate access to major medical centres. Crashes that cause vehicles to overturn are particularly hazardous in those circumstances because they can require specialised heavy equipment and traffic control to clear the scene, and can delay responders.

What witnesses can do
Investigators continue to seek information that could clarify what happened in the moments before the bus left the roadway. The OPP has asked anyone who saw the crash or who recorded it on a dash camera to contact the Superior East Wawa OPP detachment. Providing time-stamped video or specific observations about the vehicle’s speed, road conditions or other road users can assist the ongoing inquiry.
For travellers passing through northern Ontario, this incident is a reminder to allow extra time on long rural stretches, to be attentive to changing surface and weather conditions, and to ensure that any vehicle occupants use available safety restraints and remain seated while a bus is in motion.
The investigation remains active. Further updates will be issued by OPP as new information becomes available.
Reporting from the roadside and small-town junctions between northern forests and lakes, this incident underscores the contrast between Ontario’s urban centres and the road conditions that dominate the province’s north.
