OPP foot patrols lead to arrests and drug seizure; Barrie resident among charged

Police say proactive foot patrols in the area of Brentwood Road in Angus on Sept. 4 resulted in the arrest of two people and the seizure of what officers believe to be several controlled substances. Among those charged is Bonnie Ash, a 36-year-old woman from Barrie.

Members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting patrols shortly after 1 a.m. when they observed a vehicle that had stopped. Officers approached the vehicle and, after speaking with its occupants, say they “developed grounds to continue their investigation,” which led to the arrest of two passengers.

  • Seized items included quantities of suspected cocaine and fentanyl, a pill bottle containing unknown pills, a handgun holster and two cell phones.
  • Two people were arrested and charged. One is from Orillia and the other from Barrie.
  • Both accused were held in custody pending bail hearings at the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford.

The OPP identified the two accused by name: Justice Europe, 33, of Orillia, and Bonnie Ash, 36, of Barrie. Europe faces charges of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking — cocaine and the same charge relating to fentanyl, as well as a charge of failing to comply with a probation order. Ash has been charged with possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking with respect to both cocaine and fentanyl.

Accused Age Residence Charges
Justice Europe 33 Orillia Possession for purpose of trafficking — cocaine; possession for purpose of trafficking — fentanyl; fail to comply with probation
Bonnie Ash 36 Barrie Possession for purpose of trafficking — cocaine; possession for purpose of trafficking — fentanyl

Both accused remained in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford, according to the OPP release.

Community impact and police appeal

Drug trafficking charges that span communities such as Orillia, Angus and Barrie underscore how law-enforcement activity in smaller centres can have ripple effects across Simcoe County. The Nottawasaga detachment is responsible for a large geographic area that includes a mix of rural townships and growing urban centres where policing resources are often spread across long distances.

“The OPP remains committed to the safety of Ontario communities through proactive enforcement and investigation of drug trafficking.”

The OPP has urged anyone with information about illegal drug activity to come forward. They provided the provincial line at 1-888-310-1122 and pointed to Crime Stoppers for anonymous tips at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.crimestopperssdm.ca.

For Barrie residents, the arrest highlights ongoing provincial enforcement efforts targeting supply and trafficking of opioids and other controlled substances. Local emergency-service demand and public-health responses to opioid-related incidents have been a key concern for municipal officials and health providers in recent years, and seizures such as this are part of broader attempts to reduce the flow of illicit drugs in communities.

Police did not provide details in the release about the suspected quantities seized or whether investigators believe there is a larger distribution network connected to those arrested. The suspects’ next court appearances and any further disclosure will be handled through the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers as provided by police.
