Large disturbance at 559 Fights event disrupts card, prompts arrests
VISALIA — An organized mixed-martial-arts event in Visalia on Saturday night ended in a massive altercation involving roughly 100 people, leaving 15 people under arrest and three officers injured, according to local authorities and event organizers.
The disturbance unfolded during a 559 Fights show, the Visalia-based promotion that has staged more than 100 events over the past 15 years. Organizers and longtime attendees said the size and intensity of the brawl were unprecedented at the promotion's shows, which they described as typically family-friendly despite the sport's physical nature.
- Arrests: 15 people detained, some facing multiple charges.
- Injuries: Three responding officers were injured; organizers say several fighters were unable to compete.
- Event impact: About six to eight athletes reportedly could not fight because of the disruption.
Jeremy Luchau, chief executive officer of 559 Fights, said the organization and its fans were devastated by the incident. He said the promotion welcomed thousands of supporters over the years but must now take steps to prevent repeat problems.
"I'm just, sad and extremely heartbroken for both the MMA community, the fans, especially the fighters that weren't able to compete at the event,"
Luchau said in a statement that he had not slept since the incident and that the organization will work to bar individuals involved in the melee from future events. "Knowing who sits where, we are able to backlist certain emails to keep them from purchasing in the future," he said, while also thanking law enforcement and on-site security for their response.
Organizers told WE NEWS that about six to eight athletes who had trained for the event were prevented from competing because of the disruption, a loss participants and staff said was among the most difficult consequences. Luchau said the promotion will work behind the scenes to make sure those fighters are taken care of.
Liz Alva, a retired correctional officer who attends 559 Fights to support her nephew, was among spectators when the disturbance began. She described a chaotic scene and said she had to help her elderly mother exit the venue.
"Disrespect, people yelling, cursing, so it just got really hectic. I was there with my mother, who is close to 80 years old, and we had to get her out of there,"
Multiple attendees praised security personnel and responding officers for acting quickly and preventing the situation from becoming worse. Organizers echoed that sentiment and emphasized that the sport's combat should stay inside the cage, not in the crowd.
Local consequences and next steps
The melee raises questions for future 559 Fights events in Visalia and the wider Central Valley. Promoters said they are evaluating ticketing and seating practices, ramping up identification methods to prevent known troublemakers from re-entering events, and coordinating with law enforcement and private security to bolster on-site control.
Below is a summary of the known numbers from the incident:
| Metric | Number |
|---|---|
| People involved (estimated) | ~100 |
| Arrests | 15 |
| Officers injured | 3 |
| Fighters forced out | 6–8 (organizers' estimate) |
Law enforcement has not released names or detailed charge information as investigations continue. Organizers of 559 Fights said they will cooperate with authorities and pursue internal measures to prevent similar incidents.
The Visalia community — including long-time fans who described 559 Fights shows as family-friendly — now faces the challenge of restoring confidence among attendees and ensuring safer conditions for athletes, staff and spectators at future events.
WE NEWS will continue following official updates from the Visalia Police Department and 559 Fights as more information becomes available.
