Downtown Springfield crews are finishing repairs after a significant water main rupture that occurred Thursday night near the intersection of 5th and Monroe streets, city utility officials said Friday. The break — a roughly 12-foot-long failure in an aging cast-iron pipe — forced temporary power isolations, left hundreds of customers without service and will keep the road closed for about two weeks while replacement work continues.
What failed and what will replace it
City Water, Light and Power officials said the failed section was an older cast-iron pipe likely installed decades ago. Todd LaFountain, CWLP water division chief, said the damaged casting appears to be a mid-20th-century installation and that crews are replacing that brittle material with ductile iron.
“This old cast iron is somewhat brittle, that was installed up to about the late 1960’s,” LaFountain said. “We utilize ductile iron now. It’s got a higher tensile strength, so it will flex with the ground and whatnot.”
LaFountain said ductile iron has a higher tensile strength and could last longer than 100 years, compared with the roughly 100-year design life often associated with older cast-iron mains.
Service impacts and response
The rupture prompted utility crews and the Springfield Fire Department to take safety precautions that included isolating portions of the electric system. Mike Gorsek, CWLP electric division manager, said that shortly after the water main ruptured, the fire department asked the electric department to isolate the area “out of a safety precaution.”
At the peak of the incident, almost 300 customers experienced power interruptions. CWLP worked to reroute switches and restore service; by late Friday afternoon, power service had been restored for all customers. Gorsek said fewer than 50 customers downtown continued to experience problems into Friday before full restoration.
