Naperville downtown sees rapid turnover as Lennon’s shutters; tacos, gyros and eyewear on the way

Lennon’s on Jefferson Avenue closed after about a year in business. New tenants including Taco Grill Cantina, SEE Eyewear, I Heart Gyro and State & Liberty Clothing Co. plan openings in downtown Naperville this fall.

Downtown Naperville is experiencing swift change this fall as Lennon’s, a mixed dining and entertainment venue at 16 W. Jefferson Ave., quietly closed after roughly a year of operation, and a slate of new eateries and retailers prepare to open within walking distance.

Another abrupt closure at a familiar address

The business announced the shutdown on social media, saying in part:

"This is not the goodbye we hoped to have, but we are deeply thankful for the time we were given and for every person who was part of the Lennon’s story."

Lennon’s opened in August of last year with a concept that combined dining and entertainment designed to encourage patrons to "come and stay," according to previous statements from owner Jeremy Stolberg. Stolberg did not respond to a request for comment on the recent closure, and the Downtown Naperville Alliance’s executive director, Dawn Portner, said no reason was provided for the move.

High turnover at the Jefferson Avenue location

The space at 16 W. Jefferson Ave. has seen short-tenure operators before. Prior to Lennon’s, the site housed AltaVida, a Latin-inspired entertainment complex with a casual Spanish cafe that also ceased operations after less than a year.

While the closure represents a setback for that specific address, downtown business owners and developers are still pursuing new openings nearby. Among the tenants preparing to join the corridor are restaurants, an eyewear boutique and a men’s clothing retailer.

New arrivals lining up across the street and nearby

Directly across Jefferson from the former Lennon’s location, Taco Grill Cantina plans to introduce a contemporary Mexican menu at 15 W. Jefferson Ave.. The restaurant, led by owner Jose Oliver—also proprietor of Westmont’s Taco Grill and Salsa Bar—says the menu will include offerings ranging from bone marrow and pork belly tacos to salmon with mole sauce, and the venue intends to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Oliver had targeted a Sept. 15 opening but said the date was pushed back by "unforeseen issues."

  • SEE Eyewear — boutique with prescription glasses and sunglasses, aiming for a mid-October opening at 214 S. Main St..
  • I Heart Gyro — planning to move into 22 E. Chicago Ave., taking over a previously occupied spot.
  • State & Liberty Clothing Co. — a men’s apparel retailer listed among upcoming downtown arrivals.
Business Address Timing
Taco Grill Cantina 15 W. Jefferson Ave. Planned this fall (original Sept. 15 target delayed)
SEE Eyewear 214 S. Main St. Mid-October
I Heart Gyro 22 E. Chicago Ave. Opening this fall (date not specified)
State & Liberty Clothing Co. Location not specified Opening this fall

What the turnover means for Naperville

Frequent tenant turnover at high-visibility sites presents both challenges and opportunities for downtown Naperville. Short-lived concepts can signal difficulties related to rent, market fit, staffing or operations, though those factors were not specified in Lennon’s announcement. For shoppers and diners, turnover can mean a steady stream of new options but also uncertainty about which businesses will establish long-term roots.

Community leaders, property owners and prospective operators will be watching openings such as Taco Grill Cantina and SEE Eyewear closely. Successful launches could reinforce Jefferson and Main streets as destinations for a mix of dining, retail and entertainment; further closures would raise questions about what adjustments downtown needs to retain operators.

For now, residents and visitors should expect more activity and change on Naperville’s main corridors in the coming weeks as new tenants finalize openings and downtown adapts to another shift in its retail landscape.
