PAWTUCKET — The United Football League’s newest franchise was formally introduced to fans Sunday when the Rhode Island Breakers name and logo were unveiled at Centreville Bank Stadium.
Organizers opened the announcement to the public on Oct. 18, offering yard games, newly released merchandise, early access to season-ticket sign-ups and meet-and-greets with players and head coach A.J. McCarron. Officials said the Breakers will begin play with a home opener set for April 2.
Officials tout community and economic benefits
Speakers at the event included Gov. Dan McKee, UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon, and McCarron. Brandon said he had observed strong football culture in the region and pledged that games would be "affordable, accessible and fun." McKee emphasized collaboration with Pawtucket leaders to attract professional football back to the city and described anticipated local development tied to the franchise.
“What’s going to happen is this area is going to blossom,” McKee said, adding that he and Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien had worked on plans that include a pedestrian bridge and new housing projects.
McKee framed the Breakers as an element in wider redevelopment efforts, saying the team’s presence would support reinvigoration of local finances and the state economy. The governor noted downtown projects including a pedestrian bridge and the construction of "hundreds of apartments" as complementary investments to the stadium and team activity.
Coach emphasizes identity, fan role
When McCarron addressed the crowd, he stressed the importance of fans in shaping the team's identity and competitive atmosphere. He said the Breakers will strive to be a "hard-nosed team" that plays with relentless effort and seeks a home-field advantage created by a passionate fan base.
“What makes this thing special is not only my staff and our players, but you fans,” McCarron said. “Making this an atmosphere that opponents hate to play in. Making this an atmosphere that is a huge advantage for us… We are going to be a hard-nosed team that plays for 60 minutes with relentless effort, and I want our fans to be the exact same way.”
McCarron, who said he had visited Rhode Island only twice before being hired, also spoke about his eagerness to engage with the community and sample local restaurants recommended to him by residents.

Local context and expectations
The announcement revived the presence of a professional "big four" sports franchise in the area — a role left vacant when the Pawtucket Red Sox relocated in 2019. State and city officials cast the Breakers as an opportunity to bolster downtown activity, attract visitors and support transit- and housing-oriented projects near the stadium.
UFL leadership has positioned the league's model around fan accessibility and community engagement. At the Pawtucket event, Brandon highlighted both the region's history of passionate football fandom and the league’s promise to deliver affordable in-person experiences.
Organizers will need to follow through on stadium preparations, ticketing logistics and public-safety planning in the months before the April opener. For fans and local businesses, the coming season poses both immediate promotional opportunities and longer-term questions about how sports-driven development will mesh with broader revitalization efforts in Pawtucket and the surrounding communities.
Further details about ticket prices, season schedules and community programs are expected to be released by the team in the coming months.
