Hourslong standoff at northwest Glendale home ends with suspect dead
A confrontation between Glendale police and a barricaded suspect ended Wednesday with the death of a 59-year-old man, authorities said. The incident unfolded near the intersection of 75th Avenue and Glendale Avenue after officers responded to reports that the man had violated an order of protection and remained inside a home.
Police said the man’s adult daughter discovered him on surveillance video, called 911 and told officers he had returned to the residence despite the order. When officers arrived near noon, the man refused to leave and the encounter escalated into a prolonged standoff.
- Location: Home near 75th Avenue and Glendale Avenue (near Orangewood)
- Victim/suspect: 59-year-old man, deceased
- Response: Patrol officers, SWAT teams, drones
- Timeline: Standoff and gunfire continued for close to two hours
- Officer injuries: One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital
According to police, the man was known to have a history with officers and was believed to own body armor, firearms and gas masks. Officials said he used a rifle to fire at law enforcement during the standoff, damaging at least two police vehicles and downing police drones deployed to assess the situation.
"We were met with gunfire at every opportunity,"
said a police spokesman describing the resistance officers encountered as they worked to clear the home.
Investigators said their drone team was able to fly inside the residence and locate the man, who was found deceased from a gunshot wound. They have not publicly determined whether that wound was self-inflicted or the result of officer gunfire. Authorities said SWAT personnel also responded and assisted in clearing the scene.
One officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital; police said the officer is expected to be okay. There were no other reported injuries to the public. Residents near the scene were asked to shelter in place while officers contained the area and conducted their operation.
Local context and next steps for investigators
The department has characterized the man as having a history with police and as being "very anti-police," according to statements in local media. That background, along with the presence of armor and multiple weapons at the property, complicated the response and required specialized units to be deployed.
City and county investigators will review body-worn camera footage, surveillance images and other evidence collected at the scene to determine the sequence of events and whether the fatal wound was caused by the suspect or by officers. The department has not released the names of the deceased or the officers involved pending notifications and the ongoing investigation.

Residents who live in the immediate area were urged to remain sheltered while officers were on scene. Neighbors told reporters they were shaken by the extended gunfire and the large police presence, though no public evacuations were reported by authorities.
The department has said it will release more information as the investigation proceeds and as notifications are completed. This incident is among multiple officer-involved shootings tracked this year in the region; local officials and police oversight entities typically review such cases closely to determine whether department policies were followed and whether any further actions are warranted.
Anyone with information or video of the incident has been asked to contact Glendale police to assist investigators.
