Committee backs school to serve Basford East development
Cheshire East Council’s southern planning committee has given unanimous approval to plans for a new primary school on the Basford East strategic site, a central piece of the wider scheme that will deliver housing, employment land and a local centre on the edge of Crewe.
The decision, taken at the committee meeting on 9 September, grants reserved matters consent for a school that will initially operate as a one-form entry facility, accommodating up to 210 pupils across the primary age range, with scope to expand to a two-form entry school in the future.
Where the school sits and who is involved
The site sits where Onward Homes’ Signallers Croft development meets David Whitby Way within the Basford East strategic allocation, which alongside housing includes employment land being promoted by Muse and the creation of a local centre.
Cheshire East Council is both the client and the applicant for the school project. The design comes from architect Halliday Meecham and Conlon Construction is lined up as contractor. The professional team named in planning documents includes:

Planning conclusions and local concerns
Officers told the committee that the proposal is acceptable from a pure land use perspective and would deliver an essential social element of the Basford East site in a sustainable location. They added that amendments to design and layout had been secured and the development was acceptable in design and landscape terms.

Despite the unanimous vote, some concerns were raised. The application had been referred to the southern committee by Cllr Heler on grounds of traffic impact and pedestrian safety. Highways officers concluded that the effect of school traffic on the nearby roundabout and the wider highway network was acceptable.
Weston and Crewe Green Parish Council confirmed its support for the proposal but listed seven concerns, largely focused on traffic and travel, with some mention of design. Those points were noted in the committee report and have formed part of the negotiation and amendments secured by officers.

The Basford East strategic site is one of the larger allocations on the edge of Crewe. Alongside about 850 homes and employment land, the new school constitutes the social infrastructure required to support the expanding neighbourhood. With outline approval already secured through the masterplan, the reserved matters sign-off brings the education provision a step closer to delivery.
