Inspection coach smoke spotted early morning; no injuries reported
Jabalpur: An inspection coach parked in the VIP siding at Jabalpur railway station developed smoke and a small flame on the morning of August 11, railway officials said. Staff detected smoke at about 7:20 am and took immediate steps to extinguish the fire and isolate the coach, preventing wider damage or harm to the public.
Harshit Srivastava, Chief Public Relations Officer of West Central Railway, confirmed the incident and said the coach has been secured while evidence is collected. A committee of senior railway officers has been constituted to investigate the circumstances that led to the smoke and flame.
"An incident of fire was reported in an inspection coach parked at the VIP siding of Jabalpur station this morning," Srivastava said.
Kamal Kumar Talreja, Divisional Railway Manager of Jabalpur Division, told officials that the coach is used for internal inspection duties and is not part of regular passenger services. He said the coach was locked and stationed in a siding reserved for such vehicles when smoke was noticed. According to Talreja, the staff acted promptly to secure the coach and there was "no major damage." He added that a small flame was visible on the upper portion of the coach but was quickly brought under control.
Investigation under way; multiple leads being examined
Railway authorities said the precise cause remains under examination. The probe committee will consider a range of possibilities, including an electrical short circuit. Officials also indicated that footage from Railway Protection Force (RPF) cameras will be reviewed to rule out any external interference.

The occurrence has highlighted the need for routine safety checks on coaches even when they are not in active passenger service. Inspection coaches, while not carrying passengers, contain electrical installations and fittings similar to other rolling stock and are subject to wear and occasional faults. The swift response by station staff and the immediate formation of an inquiry panel were noted by railway officials as standard operating measures to prevent escalation.
Passengers and local residents were not impacted by the incident, since the coach was kept separate from active platforms and services. Railway managers reiterated that normal passenger operations at Jabalpur station continued without disruption during and after the response to the smoke.
The committee's findings are awaited. Authorities will determine any remedial steps required to prevent recurrence and to establish whether maintenance protocols, electrical inspections or other procedures need strengthening. Review of RPF camera recordings will form part of the evidence-gathering process, the officials said.
Further updates will be provided once the investigating panel submits its report and any follow-up actions are decided by West Central Railway and the Jabalpur Division.
