Extra EMU specials to ease festive rush on Howrah suburban routes

Howrah: Eastern Railway has announced the operation of 67 additional local train services across its Sealdah and Howrah divisions to manage the heavy passenger flow during Durga Puja, officials reported. The augmentation includes late‑night and evening special trains, additional services on several suburban corridors and temporary changes to regular schedules between October 16 and 21.

The Sealdah Division will run a series of late‑night and evening special locals on several nights of the festival period. These late‑night trains are scheduled on the intervening nights of October 16‑17, 17‑18, 18‑19, 19‑20 and 20‑21, connecting Sealdah with Ranaghat, Kalyani, Bangaon, Hasnabad and Dankuni, the division said. Additional trains will also run on routes linking Naihati and Krishnanagar City Junction, and on the Sealdah South section towards Baruipur, Diamond Harbour, Lakshmikantapur and Komagata Maru/ Budge Budge.

Howrah Division will deploy extra EMU specials on the nights of October 17‑18, 18‑19, 19‑20 and 20‑21. These services will connect Howrah with Barddhaman via Bandel and Dankuni, Bandel with Naihati, Seoraphuli with Tarakeswar, and Howrah with Chandanpur via Dankuni, the railway statement said. All the special trains will halt at every station en route.

  • Special late‑night locals on Sealdah routes: Ranaghat, Kalyani, Bangaon, Hasnabad, Dankuni (Oct 16‑21 intervening nights).
  • Additional evening specials on Sealdah Division: services to Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Kalyani and Bangaon (selected nights Oct 17‑21).
  • Howrah EMU specials (selected nights Oct 17‑21): Howrah–Barddhaman (via Bandel/Dankuni), Bandel–Naihati, Seoraphuli–Tarakeswar, Howrah–Chandanpur (via Dankuni).
"The special trains will stop at all stations along their routes," the railway notice said.

The Sealdah Division will additionally operate extra EMU services between Ranaghat, Sealdah and Lalgola from October 16 to 19, the announcement added. Railways have also indicated that certain regular suburban services will be rescheduled or cancelled temporarily during October 17‑21 to accommodate the special services.

For Howrah commuters, the additional EMU specials aim to provide relief during the peak festival movement to puja pandals, markets and riverfronts in Kolkata and adjoining districts. Howrah station and neighbouring suburban halts normally experience a sharp rise in passenger footfall during Durga Puja evenings, when people travel for work, family visits and cultural outings. The extra late‑night services are intended to cater to return journeys after pandal hopping and cultural programmes.

Passengers are advised to check platform notices and official Eastern Railway updates for timings and temporary changes to regular services. As with earlier festival periods, suburban services will be operated with the aim of maximising carrying capacity while maintaining safety and punctuality.

Division Key dates Main additional routes
Sealdah Oct 16–21 (late‑night/evening specials) Sealdah–Ranaghat, Sealdah–Kalyani, Sealdah–Bangaon, Sealdah–Hasnabad, Sealdah–Dankuni, Sealdah–Baruipur/Diamond Harbour/Lakshmikantapur
Howrah Oct 17–21 (selected nights) Howrah–Barddhaman (via Bandel/Dankuni), Bandel–Naihati, Seoraphuli–Tarakeswar, Howrah–Chandanpur (via Dankuni)

The railway circular did not publish exhaustive timings for every special or list all affected regular services; commuters seeking exact departure and arrival times should consult station display boards, authorised railway apps and notices posted at Howrah and suburban stations. Last‑minute changes during festive periods are common, and authorities typically adjust operations in response to passenger demand.

With Durga Puja bringing millions onto Kolkata's streets and transit network, the additional services form part of routine seasonal planning by Eastern Railway to ensure smoother movement across the greater Kolkata suburban system. Howrah's role as a major railhead and suburban interchange makes the division's measures especially consequential for daily commuters and festival travellers alike.
