GIRI expands retail footprint with larger store opposite Vedapuriswarar Temple
GIRI, a long-established Indian retailer of spiritual and religious merchandise, on 25 September 2026 opened its 39th showroom at No. 101, MG Road, Puducherry, directly opposite the Shri Vedapuriswarar Temple. The company described the outlet as a modern cultural hub intended to combine devotional retail with community and festival activities.
The new store, which opened to the public at 10:00 AM, was inaugurated by Shri N. Rangaswamy, Chief Minister of Puducherry, who was the chief guest at the ceremony. Other dignitaries present included Shri Vignesh Kannan, MLA, and representatives from religious institutions.
GIRI said the Puducherry showroom marks a milestone in its 74-year history and represents its 39th retail location. The company stated the premises have been redesigned to meet contemporary retail standards while retaining a focus on calm and devotional ambience.
- Product range: pooja essentials, idols, festival products, organic foods, handicrafts, Golu dolls and stands, yantras, garlands, spiritual books and music, traditional attire.
- Positioning: described as a cultural hub intended for families, devotees and visitors.
- Location advantage: opposite a major temple on MG Road, a central artery in Puducherry's cultural life.
At the inauguration, the management of Giri Trading Agency Private Limited said the MG Road site is central to Puducherry’s spiritual and cultural life and that the showroom would be used to host festivals and community events. In his remarks, Chief Minister Shri N. Rangaswamy said,
“It is a great benefit for the people of Puducherry to have all spiritual products available under one roof. Being located right next to the Eeswaran (Shri Vedapuriswarar) Temple adds special significance. GIRI continues to play a vital role in fostering spirituality.”
What the new showroom means for local retail and visitors
The expanded outlet is likely to affect several local dynamics: it increases retail choice for residents seeking religious and festival goods, may draw footfall from temple visitors, and could serve as an added venue for cultural programming during major festivals. For small traders in traditional pooja goods and festival wares, the presence of a larger organised retailer may alter customer patterns, especially during peak seasons such as Navaratri and local temple festivals.
GIRI’s stated emphasis on organic foods and handicrafts may also appeal to tourists and to Puducherry’s resident population that shop for both daily devotional needs and festival-specific items. The management characterised the space as aiming for convenience and accessibility, while preserving a tranquil shopping environment.

During the ceremony GIRI management said they expect the showroom to become a neighbourhood meeting point as well as a retail destination. The company’s materials highlight plans to mark festivals and community gatherings at the location, although specific event schedules were not announced at the opening.
Local residents and regular temple visitors will now find a consolidated retail option on MG Road for a broad range of devotional and cultural items. Observers of Puducherry’s retail landscape note that organised retail outlets opening in close proximity to temples and pilgrimage centres often change seasonal supply chains and tourist spending patterns, but any longer-term impact on informal traders or rental values was not quantified at the inauguration.
The opening confirms GIRI’s continued expansion strategy in southern India and its positioning at the intersection of retail and cultural programming. The company framed the new Puducherry showroom as both a commercial outlet and a platform for sustaining and celebrating living traditions.
