One of Victoria’s best-known live-music venues is on a path back to life after a months-long effort to save it from closure. The Arts On View Society said this week that work to stabilise and rebuild the interior of Hermann’s Jazz Club is under way and the club aims to reopen this fall.
Community fundraising and structural overhaul
Hermann’s, founded in 1981 and long regarded as one of Canada’s oldest jazz clubs, faced permanent closure earlier this year when its operator, Arts On View Society, announced it could not sustain mounting debts and would close both Hermann’s and the adjacent View Street Social. In response, supporters launched a public campaign that ultimately raised $450,000 — the society says the funds were the amount needed to keep the venue running.
The rescue has coincided with a complicated physical rebuild of the space located in the city-owned building at 751–753 View Street. Arts On View said the project turned into a larger and more complex undertaking than first anticipated, requiring close coordination among engineers, fabricators, consultants and skilled tradespeople.

For several weeks the project was stalled as crews awaited structural pillars and a new concrete floor. Arts On View described the completion of that critical work as a significant milestone that allows the organisation to turn its attention to interior rebuilding and re-opening tasks.
“We are now working toward reopening Hermann’s this fall. There is still a great deal of work ahead, and the opening date will depend on how the interior rebuild progresses.”
The message was posted by Al Smith, board chair of Arts On View and acting executive director. He said the society’s efforts are focused on protecting Hermann’s, reopening the doors and building a stronger foundation for the future.
Governance changes amid the rebuild
While the physical work has taken place, Arts On View moved to shore up its organisational standing. The society developed a comprehensive set of bylaws to govern membership, board elections and board terms, and completed necessary records and filings to return to good standing with the provincial authority responsible for societies. The group framed those changes as part of the rescue effort to put the club on a more stable footing.
The club’s companion venue, View Street Social, was part of the original closure notice earlier this year. Both spaces serve as performance and event hubs downtown, and supporters framed the fundraising as an expression of the community’s attachment to live music and the atmosphere the club has fostered for decades.
What’s next for Victoria’s music landmark
With the critical structural work finished, Arts On View says it will concentrate on interior rehab and the remaining steps required to welcome patrons back. The society did not announce a fixed opening date; it underlined that timing depends on the progress of the interior rebuild and the coordinated work of trades and consultants.
For Victoria residents, the outcome of the campaign and rebuild will determine whether a familiar late-night venue and rehearsal ground for local performers re-emerges this year.
