Community celebrations return to the West Side as Uptown hosts contemporary art festival
Saint John is set for a busy run of neighbourhood and cultural events this week, with the West Side’s long‑running community festival joined by a free, citywide contemporary art celebration in Uptown and a range of family and pet activities across the region.
West Saint John Days is underway and runs through Saturday, offering residents an opportunity to connect with neighbours and community organisations. The multi‑day festival promotes West Side pride, local history and community spirit with a varied program that organisers say is aimed at all ages.
“Celebrate West Saint John Days!”
Programming includes live entertainment, family activities, lawn bowling, bingo and storytelling. The format is intentionally community‑centred, with a mix of free and accessible events intended to bring neighbours together and highlight local groups.
THIRD SHIFT brings contemporary art to Uptown
Beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend (Aug. 14–16), Uptown Saint John will be transformed by THIRD SHIFT, a free, all‑ages festival of contemporary art. The event will include public art installations, performances, projections, film screenings, workshops and immersive experiences aimed at inviting residents and visitors to view the downtown core in a new light.
Organisers have promoted the festival as an interactive celebration of contemporary practice designed to be welcoming to both art enthusiasts and casual visitors looking for a distinctive summer outing in the city.
Pet lovers, sports fans and fundraisers among weekend offerings
Dog owners in the region also have options: the New Brunswick Kennel Club will host All Breed Championship Shows at the Lorneville Community Centre across three days, featuring four championship shows. The weekend schedule includes Junior Handling competitions, Owner‑Handler events and special breed boosters for Bulldogs, Dachshunds, Retrievers and others.
On Saturday, families and dog owners are invited to a pet social at the Grand Bay‑Westfield Big Paw Little Paw Dog Park. The event will feature activities, a free barbecue and an informal social setting for dogs and their people.
Elsewhere, the RICC Challenge takes place Aug. 15–16 across locations in Rothesay. The fundraising weekend offers recreational and competitive divisions in pickleball, ball hockey, 3‑on‑3 basketball and spikeball. Proceeds support the RICC Community Fundraising Campaign and the development of a community facility intended to serve residents in future generations.

These listings reflect organiser announcements for the week and provide a snapshot of activities across Saint John and neighbouring communities. Residents planning to attend are advised to check for specific start times, accessibility details and any weather‑related changes before travelling.
For neighbourhoods hosting their own gatherings, such events can bring increased foot traffic to local businesses and reinforce community ties. Uptown merchants and cultural organisations often work in partnership with festival organisers during large public events such as THIRD SHIFT, and downtown hospitality venues are likely to see additional visits through the weekend.
With a mix of free community programming and ticketed or registration‑based activities, the week offers multiple ways for families, arts patrons and pet owners to participate in Saint John’s late‑summer calendar.
