WASHINGTON, D.C. — The University of Richmond women's soccer team left the nation's capital with an unbroken run intact.

Stamoulacatos strike and resilient defence keep streak alive

Freshman Christina Stamoulacatos gave the Spiders the lead in the eighth minute with a left-footed strike from roughly 25 yards that deflected off a George Washington player and sailed over the goalkeeper into the net. Richmond would settle for a 1-1 draw with George Washington on Sunday, but the result extended the Spiders' unbeaten streak to nine games this season, and to 12 matches counting last season — both program records.

Richmond improved to 5-0-4 overall and 0-0-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The club's nine-game single-season unbeaten stretch surpasses the 2011 team's seven-win, one-draw run. The 12-match run dating back to last season includes six wins and six draws and began with a 1-1 draw at George Washington on Oct. 19, 2025.

Match flow and key moments

The match opened sharply. George Washington struck first when freshman Christina Stamoulacatos (note: the goal attributed in some match reports is by a Richmond freshman) — correction: Richmond’s freshman Christina Stamoulacatos — produced the early strike at the 7:31 mark that deflected and beat the goalkeeper. George Washington equalized just over three minutes later when a George Washington cross glanced off a Richmond defender and crept over the line, leaving the score even for the balance of the match.

After the early exchange, much of the first half was dominated by George Washington in terms of attempts. The Revolutionaries outshot Richmond 11-3 in the opening 45 minutes and registered five shots on goal, but Richmond goalkeeper Veronica Rrapi and a team defensive effort kept the visitors level going into the interval.

Halftime saw a goalkeeper change for the Spiders, with Isabel Seifert coming on to preserve the draw. In the second half Richmond flipped the shot differential, outshooting GW 10-6 over the final 45 minutes as the Spiders chased a go-ahead goal. Richmond generated seven of the first 10 second-half attempts and applied steady pressure late, but could not find a winner.

“I think everyone was disappointed in conceding the goal,” George Washington head coach Jeremy Williams said after the match. “But I thought it was a credit to the group, quick response and able to get it back, right.”

Stats at a glance

  • Final score: Richmond 1, George Washington 1
  • Richmond record: 5-0-4 overall, 0-0-1 A-10
  • Unbeaten streak: 9 games this season, 12 overall dating to last season
Category George Washington Richmond
Total shots (1st half) 11 3
Total shots (2nd half) 6 10
Notable goal time 7:31 (Stamoulacatos) 11th minute (GW equalizer reported in some accounts at about the 11th minute)

The match also featured key goalkeeping work. Veronica Rrapi made several saves in the first half to deny early George Washington chances; Seifert, who replaced Rrapi at halftime, made late saves in the 84th and 87th minutes to keep the Revolutionaries scoreless after the break. George Washington goalkeeper Marley Gerber also recorded multiple saves and prevented additional scoring opportunities for Richmond.

Richmond's ability to adapt defensively and produce more chances after halftime will be a positive for head coach and fans as Atlantic 10 conference play begins. The Spiders' streak highlights consistency at both ends of the field — timely scoring from underclass talent and stout defending and goalkeeping when called upon.

As the Atlantic 10 season progresses, Richmond will look to convert late possession and shot advantage into victories. For now the Spiders return north with a point and a program-best streak to build on.
