5X Fest brings Panjabi music, art and community to Mississauga

For the first time in its two-decade history, 5X Fest, one of Canada’s leading Panjabi arts organisations, is expanding beyond British Columbia and staging a two-day event in Mississauga. The festival will take place on August 21 and 22 at the city’s historic Small Arms Inspection Building, adding a significant Panjabi cultural event to the city’s summer arts calendar.

The Mississauga presentation, organised in partnership with Mississauga Film and Music and supported by Visit Mississauga, will be powered by CBC and is billed as an accessible, rain-or-shine celebration of contemporary Panjabi music, visual art and creative expression. Festival organisers say the event is conveniently located near multiple public transit options.

Two distinct nights: art talk and blockparty

The program is split into two headline events. On the evening of August 21 the venue will host 5X Art Party x Inkquisitive, a gallery-style night centred on the work of internationally known Panjabi artist Amandeep Singh, who performs under the name Inkquisitive. The artist’s appearance marks the final stop of his international tour and will include an artist’s talk, an exhibition of original works and a live auction of previously unreleased pieces.

The exhibition will also showcase eight emerging South Asian visual artists from the region. Included names in the program are Sharn Bassi, Priya Kaur Handa, Jasmin Pannu, Aakashdeep Bedi, Shweta Rastogi, Preet Kaur Pooni, CHAOSX and Amrita Sokhy Marwaha. Tickets for the Art Party are available through the festival’s ticketing partner.

The festival continues the next day with the 5X Blockparty, described by organisers as a celebration of Panjabi music, culture and community that will bring established international performers together with the next generation of South Asian creatives. Details on the Blockparty schedule and performers were published as part of the Mississauga announcement.

Local impact and accessibility

Event organisers emphasise accessibility and community building. The choice of the Small Arms Inspection Building, a heritage site on Lakeshore Road East, positions the festival within a city venue that has hosted cultural programming in Mississauga before. The arrival of 5X Fest is being promoted as a boost to Mississauga’s reputation as a destination for live music and cultural events.

Organisers say the Mississauga edition will connect internationally recognised Panjabi artists with emerging local creatives, offering both performance and visual-art components. For local residents, the festival presents an opportunity to see established and rising Panjabi talent in a central Lakeshore venue and to participate in public programming that highlights cultural expression and community networks.

As the city continues to expand its live music and arts offerings, the arrival of 5X Fest is likely to draw audiences from across the GTA and bolster the profile of Mississauga’s waterfront cultural corridor. Residents and visitors can find tickets and further program details on the festival’s ticketing page and through the City of Mississauga’s events listings.
