Vernon firefighters and provincial wildfire crews continued to battle a house fire into the second day after a large single-family home in the Beverly Hills Estate neighbourhood was reported fully involved Saturday evening.

Fire began Saturday, remained active Sunday

The blaze was first reported around 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, with dark smoke visible as crews were dispatched to the 100 block of Sunset Boulevard. By the time Vernon Fire Rescue arrived, the house was described as fully engulfed.

As of midday Sunday, smoke continued to be seen in the area and firefighters remained on scene. The City of Vernon said crews and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) were present, with aerial resources monitoring the situation and crews on the ground available to provide additional support if required.

“Due to the extent of the fire and its location adjacent to a wildland interface area, crews operated in defensive conditions and focused on containing the fire from outside the structure,”

the city said in an email to the Morning Star. That defensive posture reflects concerns about the interface with nearby forested areas—where structure fires can threaten adjacent vegetation and, conversely, where wildland fire can quickly spread to homes.

Mutual aid and response coverage

Support came from neighbouring departments: the Kelowna and Kamloops fire departments provided mutual aid. As part of mutual-aid protocols, crews from those Interior communities were stationed at Vernon fire halls to maintain emergency response coverage while personnel were committed to the Beverly Hills scene.

  • Agencies on scene: Vernon Fire Rescue, BC Wildfire Service.
  • Mutual aid: Kelowna and Kamloops fire departments.
  • Location: 100 block of Sunset Boulevard, Beverly Hills Estate, Vernon.
  • Initial report: about 5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8.

Operations and public safety

Because the house was adjacent to a wildland interface, crews limited operations to defensive tactics and containment from outside the structure. The city and BCWS monitored the scene with ground crews and aerial assets available as needed. No further operational details, such as cause or injuries, were included in the city’s release or subsequent updates.

Residents in interface neighbourhoods are often reminded that fires near forested edges require different tactics than urban structure fires, including greater attention to potential spread and the need for wider safety perimeters. The use of aerial monitoring in this response underscores the priority of situational awareness when structures and wildland meet.

Time Update
~5:00 p.m., Aug. 8 Fire reported; large single-family home fully involved when crews arrived.
~6:10 p.m., Aug. 8 Black smoke observed from the area; city acknowledges fire.
9:15 p.m., Aug. 8 BCWS and Vernon Fire Rescue remain on scene; mutual aid noted.
Midday, Aug. 9 Smoke still visible; crews operating defensively with BCWS support.

City officials told the Morning Star that more information would be provided as it became available. The Morning Star had also reached out to the RCMP and the Vernon Fire Department for further information.

For Vernon residents, the incident is a reminder of the layered risks in neighbourhoods that border wildland areas. In a region where summer wildfire risk can change rapidly, defensive operations around structures aim to protect surrounding values while limiting risk to firefighters when conditions or fire behaviour make interior firefighting unsafe.

Local residents are advised to follow official updates from the City of Vernon and BC Wildfire Service. The city’s earlier messaging about emergency response coverage—stationing mutual-aid crews at Vernon fire halls—reflects an effort to keep the community protected while heavy resources were tied to the Beverly Hills response.

WE NEWS will continue to monitor the situation and report confirmed updates on containment, cause and any impacts to nearby properties or evacuation notices.
