The Calgary Police Service has charged three people in connection with an extortion incident on March 25 that targeted a member of the city’s South Asian community, and investigators say the probe into a wider pattern of threats and coercion continues.
Allegations, arrests and a continuing manhunt
Police say the matter began when a suspect contacted the victim by WhatsApp demanding money. Investigators allege the group used detailed knowledge of the victim’s personal and business affairs to pressure and threaten them, then made repeated phone calls with explicit threats of violence.
About 12 hours after those calls, at roughly 4:30 a.m., an unknown suspect fired a gun at the victim’s residence and then fled in a stolen vehicle, the CPS says. After examining physical and digital evidence, including CCTV footage, police identified a suspect as Tanveer Singh, 21. Singh is currently wanted on a warrant for possession of stolen property over $5,000. Authorities have described him as about 5 ft. 8 in., approximately 130 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, and have asked the public to help locate him.
Two other people have been charged. On Sept. 8, police arrested Kanureet Kaur, 23, and charged her with one count of extortion, alleging she provided personal information about the victim to the perpetrators. She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 6.
A 17-year-old male — not named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — was charged with one count of extortion on July 29 for allegedly facilitating communications and participating in making threats. Police say the youth has since been released from custody.
"While these charges are an important step, this investigation is far from over."
Police emphasised the charges represent progress but not an end to their work on the case.
