The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says soldiers operating along the South Africa–Zimbabwe border in Limpopo recovered a luxury vehicle and confiscated consignments of illicit goods valued at nearly R3.69 million during a series of anti-smuggling operations, according to the military.
Vehicle retrieved from the Limpopo River
Members of the 4 Artillery Regiment, operating under Joint Operations Limpopo, recovered a Range Rover valued at R1,300,000.00 from the Limpopo River after suspects allegedly drove the vehicle into the water while attempting to evade arrest, the SANDF said. Soldiers retrieved the vehicle, but the suspects fled the scene.
"While busy at various parts of the South Africa/Zimbabwe border, our soldiers confiscated a Range Rover valued at R1,300,000.00 which unfortunately the suspects had driven straight into the Limpopo River in their attempt to evade arrest," the SANDF said.
Large cigarette consignment and other goods seized
In a separate interception near Echo Station 1, troops intercepted a consignment of illicit cigarettes valued at R2,344,845. The SANDF also reported a separate seizure of illicit goods in the Malalahoek area valued at R44,000.
Adding the three recoveries together yields a total of R3,688,845 in recovered value.

Military describes operations as relentless
The SANDF praised the soldiers involved, saying the men and women of the 4 Artillery Regiment “refuse to sleep at night” and that night-time efforts often produce results. The military framed the operations as part of a continued crackdown on cross-border crime in the province.
