A detainee arrested in connection with a 2024 murder escaped from police custody at Maganeng Clinic in the North West on Tuesday morning but was rearrested later that evening, North West police said.
Escape during medical visit prompts full-scale search
Police took four detainees from Pudimoe Police Station to Maganeng Clinic for medical treatment. Shortly after arriving at the facility at about 10:50, one of the men, identified as Tshepo Lobelo, allegedly fled into nearby bushes, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Anne Magakoe said.
Authorities immediately activated the 72-Hour Activation Plan and launched a search involving multiple SAPS units and specialised resources. The multidisciplinary operation located and rearrested Lobelo at about 19:45 the same day.
“An escape from lawful custody is a serious matter, and every effort will be made to ensure that those who attempt to evade the justice system are brought back to face the full might of the law,”
Colonel Magakoe confirmed Lobelo had been arrested for a murder committed in 2024 and that the court matter was remanded to 7 December. He will now face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody and is due to appear at Pudimoe Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Police to investigate transport and supervision procedures
Magakoe said investigations into the circumstances of the escape are ongoing. The probe will look specifically at the transportation, restraint and supervision of the detainee while in police care.
North West provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Arthur Adams praised the coordinated response and the members involved in the arrest operation.
