A multi-disciplinary police operation on a farm in Klipvoorstad, near Jericho in the North West, resulted in the arrest of a 62-year-old man and the dismantling of a suspected crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as cat) manufacturing laboratory, police said. Three other men who were at the property fled into surrounding bush and remain at large.
Community tip-off triggered operation
Police said the operation began after residents reported suspicious activity at the property and a strong chemical smell coming from the farm. Members of crime intelligence, visible policing, forensic specialists, a K9 unit and a SAPS drone pilot responded to the scene, according to North West police spokesperson Colonel Anne Magakoe.
Officers found a white Mahindra bakkie parked at the farm entrance. When four men at the premises noticed the police vehicles they ran into the surrounding bushes. The bakkie driver identified himself as the farm owner and was questioned; police then conducted a search of the property with his consent.
Suspected drug-manufacturing equipment and chemicals seized
During the search, investigators detected a strong chemical odour and uncovered substances and equipment believed to be used in the production of crystal methamphetamine. Forensic teams from the Local Criminal Record Centre and the Forensic Science Laboratory processed the scene and collected evidence.
"Preliminary investigations established that the suspected operation was allegedly involved in the manufacturing of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'cat',"
Magakoe said police confiscated a range of items allegedly linked to the operation, including chemicals, raw materials, manufacturing equipment and tools, as well as a substance believed to be the final drug product. The bakkie was also seized for further investigation.
- Responding units: crime intelligence, visible policing, forensics, K9 unit, SAPS drone pilot
- Items seized: chemicals, raw materials, manufacturing equipment, tools, suspected final drug product, the bakkie
- Suspects: one 62-year-old arrested; three men fled and remain at large
Search and investigations ongoing
Despite assistance from the Hartbeespoortdam K9 Unit and drone operators, the three men who fled the scene evaded arrest, Magakoe said.
"Despite the extensive search, the suspects managed to evade arrest,"
Police confirmed the matter has been opened for further investigation. Forensic specialists are analysing the seized items to determine the nature of the substances and to identify any additional evidence that could link suspects to the operation.
What this means for local communities
Illegal drug-manufacturing sites pose significant risks to farmworkers, residents and the local environment. Chemical by-products and makeshift laboratories can cause fires, explosions and contamination of soil and water. Community members who reported suspicious activity played a direct role in alerting authorities and helping to remove a potential hazard from the area.
Police urged anyone with information about the suspects or the operation to come forward. Timely tips can help investigators locate those who fled and prevent further harm.

How to help
Police advised residents to report suspicious activity to their nearest police station. Anonymous tip-offs may be provided via established community policing forums or SAPS channels. Residents who may have been exposed to chemicals at the site should seek medical attention and bring this to the attention of health personnel.
The discovery underlines the ongoing challenge posed by clandestine laboratories in rural areas and the importance of community vigilance. Continued cooperation between residents and law enforcement will be crucial as investigators work to locate the remaining suspects and finalise forensic analysis.
