Four convictions: long sentences and register entries
The Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit has secured convictions and lengthy custodial sentences in four separate rape matters at the Klerksdorp Regional Court, North West police confirmed.
Captain Majang Skalkie, the North West police spokesperson, said the offenders were ordered to have their names entered on the National Register for Sex Offenders and were declared unfit to possess firearms under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act.
| Accused | Age | Sentence | Case detail (as reported) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freddy Thobedi | 38 | 10 years (first conviction) + 10 years (second conviction) | Convicted of rape on 16 July 2022 (victim 27) and another on 22 Sept 2021 (victim 39); incidents reportedly in Jouberton and Kanana Extension 14 |
| Ishmael Tsholofelo Montsho | 34 | Life imprisonment | Victim (29) was asleep with her child when the accused allegedly entered the house and assaulted her |
| Tisetso Matolo | 28 | 20 years | Former boyfriend allegedly dragged a 21-year-old to his residence and raped her |
Investigations led by Klerksdorp detectives
Captain Skalkie said Detective Sergeant Ramontshiwa Abel Roberts led investigations into the three cases involving Thobedi and Montsho, while Detective Constable Tumisang Lobakeng investigated the matter involving Tisetso Matolo.
The convictions follow a series of separate incidents:
- On 16 July 2022, a 27-year-old woman seeking transport to Jouberton was allegedly taken to a dark house, threatened with a knife and raped; the accused was identified as a relative’s partner.
- On 22 September 2021, a 39-year-old woman was allegedly taken to a house in Kanana Extension 14 under the pretext of collecting a wheelbarrow and was raped.
- In a different case, a 29-year-old woman sleeping with her three-year-old child reportedly awoke to find an intruder in the bed, leading to a conviction and a life sentence for the accused.
- In the fourth case, a 21-year-old woman refused to go with her former boyfriend; she was allegedly dragged to his home and raped.
“The courts further ordered the convicted offenders’ names to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and declared the offenders unfit to possess firearms in terms of Section 103,” Captain Majang Skalkie said.
Local consequences and context
These convictions will matter to Klerksdorp residents for several reasons. They reflect sustained investigative work by the FCS unit and offer a measure of legal closure for the victims. At the same time, the cases underline ongoing concerns about gender‑based violence in our towns and townships, including Jouberton and Kanana Extension.
For communities wrestling with fear and the social and economic fallout of violent crime, the sentences and registry orders carry both punitive and preventative intent: to remove dangerous individuals from the streets and to reduce their future access to weapons. For survivors, the National Register entry is an administrative action that may assist policing and parole decisions in future.
The outcomes also demonstrate the role of specialised detectives in securing convictions. Detective Sergeant Roberts and Detective Constable Lobakeng are named in police statements as leading the investigations that produced the guilty verdicts and sentences.
Beyond courtrooms, the day-to-day work of preventing sexual offences depends on accessible policing, community reporting, victim support services and timely forensic work. While courts hand down sentences, survivors and families continue to need medical, psycho-social and legal support.
Police did not provide further detail on whether the sentences will run concurrently or consecutively, beyond the two separate 10‑year terms imposed on Thobedi as reported. The FCS Unit’s convictions will now form part of criminal records and the National Register as required by law.
Members of the public with information on sex offences are urged to contact the Klerksdorp FCS Unit through SAPS channels so that matters can be investigated and prosecuted.
