GROBLERSDAL — A 44-year-old Kenyan national has appeared in the Groblersdal Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo on charges linked to the alleged sexual exploitation of school learners, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional office said.

The accused faces a total of two counts of rape and two counts of sexual grooming, according to NPA regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi. The identities of the child complainants have been withheld to protect them from secondary victimisation, the spokesperson said.

Allegations and how the case emerged

Malabi said the alleged offences date back to 2022. The NPA’s account states that learners were recruited from a local school and taken to a room rented by the accused in Groblersdal. It is alleged he filmed the children while they were naked and gave them money before allegedly compelling them to perform sexual acts.

"The matter came to light after the victims were allegedly instructed to recruit other learners from the same school, resulting in the information being disclosed at the school," said Malabi.

The information was reportedly passed to the school community and then reported to the South African Police Service, which led to the arrest of the suspect. The accused remains in custody while police investigations continue, the NPA said.

Bail and next court date

The State is opposing the accused’s release on bail. The matter has been postponed to 23 September 2026 to allow the accused time to secure legal representation and to give investigators further time to complete inquiries, Malabi said.

Child sexual offences are treated as a priority for prosecution, the NPA added, and any court process will take into account the vulnerability and protection needs of the complainants.

Community and legal context

The allegations, if proven, point to conduct that would attract severe criminal penalties and invoke specialised support for victims. Under South African law, sexual offences against children are prioritised by both the police and the prosecuting authority, and courts consider both the safety of victims and the public interest when deciding on bail.

For parents, educators and community members, the case underscores the importance of safeguarding procedures at schools, timely reporting to authorities and access to support services for affected learners. The Department of Social Development, designated child protection units and non-governmental organisations are typically involved when criminal matters affect minors, although their specific involvement in this matter was not detailed in the NPA statement.

The NPA said it would prioritise the prosecution while taking into account the vulnerability of the complainants. Further court papers and police statements will determine the evidence the State will rely on when the matter returns to court.

Requests for additional comment from police and the Department of Basic Education were not included in the NPA statement released to media. The identity of the accused has been withheld to prevent identification of the children involved.

This office will follow developments in the case and report further information as it becomes available from the courts, the NPA and investigating officers.
