Adrian Birrell, the 65-year-old coach who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to three SA20 titles, has been appointed head coach of the Sharjah Warriorz ahead of the fifth season of the International League T20 (ILT20).
From Eastern Cape to Sharjah
Birrell brings to the Warriorz a track record in South African franchise cricket and an enduring connection to the Eastern Cape. He played for Eastern Province between 1984-85 and 1997-98, compiling 1,480 runs in 45 first-class matches and taking 75 wickets with his legbreaks during his playing career.
More recently he has enjoyed notable success as a coach. Birrell guided Sunrisers Eastern Cape to three SA20 championships and is currently head coach of Sunrisers Leeds in the Women’s Hundred.
Warriorz seek turnaround
The Sharjah franchise finished bottom of the table in the ILT20’s previous edition in 2025-26 and are yet to win the competition. Their fifth season runs from 22 November to 20 December, having been moved to an earlier window than in past years.
On his appointment Birrell said he was looking forward to the challenge:
"I am delighted to be joining the Sharjah Warriorz ahead of the upcoming ILT20 season. I am excited to work with this talented group of players and support staff as we build a new campaign. Our objective will be to create a strong team culture, maintain high standards and instil a winning mindset among everyone."
What Birrell brings
Birrell’s résumé includes a spell as Ireland head coach from 2002 to 2007, which culminated in Ireland reaching the Super Eight stage of the World Cup in the West Indies. He also spent five years as an assistant coach with South Africa between 2013 and 2017 before moving into franchise coaching.
- Playing pedigree: Eastern Province (1984-85 to 1997-98) — 1,480 FC runs, 75 wickets.
- International coaching: Ireland head coach (2002–2007); assistant coach with South Africa (2013–2017).
- Franchise success: Three SA20 titles with Sunrisers Eastern Cape; current head coach at Sunrisers Leeds (Women’s Hundred).
Context within the global franchise scene
The appointment underlines the further internationalisation of coaching appointments in franchise cricket, and the cross-pollination between South African domestic successes and global T20 leagues. The Knight Riders Group, another major franchise owner with interests in the ILT20, recently strengthened its technical bench when Ryan ten Doeschate — the former Netherlands batter and ex-India batting coach — was named head of cricket strategy for the group last month.

Local significance
For the Eastern Cape cricket community, Birrell’s move reinforces the province’s role as a talent and leadership pool for global T20 competitions. Coaches and players who have honed their skills in the South African system continue to find opportunities in lucrative overseas leagues, which in turn raises the profile of provincial structures.
Sharjah’s choice of Birrell signals the franchise’s intent to reconfigure its approach after a disappointing campaign in 2025-26. How that strategy translates into recruitment, team culture and match-day tactics will be watched closely by cricket followers, particularly supporters with ties to the Eastern Cape who have followed Birrell’s career since his playing days at Eastern Province.
As franchises prepare for the condensed ILT20 window later this year, Birrell will be expected to assemble a competitive group quickly and address the weaknesses that left the Warriorz at the foot of the table last season.
Selection, overseas signings and pre-season preparation will be pivotal over the coming months; details on player acquisitions and the wider coaching staff were not released at the time of the announcement.
Further updates on squad composition and the Warriorz’s plans for the ILT20 are expected as the tournament approaches.
