WINDFIELD, Kan. — Investigators are probing a fatal shooting that left six members of a family dead at a Windfield residence after a man called 911 saying he had killed his family and intended to kill himself, authorities said.
Police were already nearby when call came in
Officials said officers were working at an unrelated traffic crash roughly two blocks from the home when a 911 call came in around 8:50 a.m. The caller identified himself as the shooter, Windfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said at a news briefing.
According to DeLong, the first officer who approached the house pulled back after hearing a single gunshot. Officers then established a perimeter and treated the situation as a potential barricade with an armed subject. A regional SWAT team and deputies from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office later joined the response.
“At approximately 8:50 a.m., our officers received a 911 call from a male individual who stated that he had killed his entire family and he was getting ready to kill himself,”
More than two hours after the initial call, officers entered the home and discovered multiple deceased individuals, DeLong said. He emphasized to the public that investigators currently consider the episode an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The deceased have been identified by authorities as:
- Ronald H. Williams, 53 — the suspected shooter
- Kelly L. George, 44 — mother
- Carol A. Williams, 9
- Ronald H. Williams Jr., 7
- Sarah K. Williams, 5
- Kelly M. McGee Williams, 3

Investigators looking for motive
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has joined the local inquiry to assist with evidence collection and to help determine a motive, a KBI official said through the agency. DeLong told reporters the department had made contact with the father in recent weeks after earlier calls to the neighborhood about aggression and reports of gunfire, though those prior responses did not produce sufficient evidence to bring charges or other intervention.
Officials also disclosed that Williams appears in the state sex-offender registry. Court records show that in 1998 he pleaded guilty to two attempted indecent-liberties counts involving a juvenile and one count of battery connected to the same victim, according to public court documents.
Community response and next steps
Authorities said the scene was secured and that investigators executed a search and evidence recovery operation before making the deaths public. Cowley County officials and Windfield police did not release information about any weapons recovered or other evidence tied to the case.
DeLong urged the public not to speculate and said the investigation remains active. He reiterated that the shooting appears to be limited to the household and there is no known continued danger to residents in the area.
Law enforcement agencies expect to continue interviews and forensic work in the coming days as they seek to construct a clear timeline of events and determine a motive. The KBI and local authorities will release additional information as it becomes available and as investigative and legal considerations allow.
Resources for residents
Local officials did not announce an arrangement for community support or counseling but encouraged anyone affected by the incident to reach out to local mental health providers, clergy or crisis hotlines. Those seeking updates should monitor direct communications from Windfield Police and the KBI.
As investigators work to piece together the circumstances that led to the deaths, neighbors described shock and grief. Officials asked anyone with relevant information about the case to contact Windfield Police or the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.
