Why the closures are happening
DMV officials said budget considerations and the condition of both Donovan and Henderson sites made maintaining them impractical. A DMV spokesperson described the cost of renovating and operating the two offices as greater than consolidating services at a single, newer site.
“Really it just kind of boils down to funding, it's just very expensive to operate both facilities. We just work within a budget, again it's all within our highway funds and everything like that. Again, just making sure that we're not going over the budget that we're allotted,”
The agency said the decision to concentrate services at the Silverado location was viewed as the best option to keep services running while managing limited resources. Certain services previously offered at the Donovan Street location, including commercial driver’s license (CDL) services, will be transferred to the new state-of-the-art facility on Silverado Ranch Boulevard, which is located nearly 10 miles south of the current North Las Vegas site.

North Las Vegas residents expressed frustration and concern about the additional travel time, costs and logistical challenges created by the move. For some, the Donovan site was the closest and most convenient option for recurring needs such as CDL testing and renewals.
“This is the closest one, especially for getting the CDL. ... Very inconvenient, you know, cause we have gas prices, you got the freeway, and a lot of people don't really have money like that to be driving out there,”
One North Las Vegas resident said the added distance to Silverado will be a real burden for people who rely on the Donovan office for frequent transactions. The resident questioned whether the larger facility would mitigate the impacts that come with losing a nearby office.
