SALINAS, Calif. — Maya Cinemas will reopen its downtown Salinas theater on Oct. 9, 2026, city officials and the company announced Monday, reversing a sudden closure that left residents and downtown businesses scrambling earlier this month.
Partnership seeks to stabilize downtown venue
The reopening follows a coordinated effort by the City of Salinas, Maya Cinemas, the local chamber of commerce and the downtown association to develop a plan to keep the theater operating. Officials said the strategy is intended not only to resume movie screenings but to broaden the venue’s role in downtown life.
Under the plan, the theater will host conferences, meetings and outside events in addition to regular film showings. City officials said discussions are under way about adding more Spanish-language films to better reflect the community the cinema serves. Additional security measures and improved lighting are planned for the adjacent parking garage.
“Thank you for your patronage,”
A sign thanking customers for their patronage was seen at the Salinas location after the closure was first reported earlier this month. Maya Cinemas cited financial reasons for the shutdown, saying attendance at the theater never fully recovered following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Historic Salinas location, regional footprint
The Salinas theater was the first Maya Cinemas location, according to the company, opening in 2003. The company now operates sites in Bakersfield, Pittsburg, Delano and North Las Vegas. Maya Cinemas also closed a location near Fresno State; that site is preparing to transition to Galaxy Theatres as its new operator, campus officials said.
- Reopening date: Oct. 9, 2026
- Main goals: Diversify uses, add Spanish-language films, enhance security and lighting
- Reason for closure: Financial pressures and low post-pandemic attendance

Officials did not release detailed financial terms of the agreement or say whether the city would provide direct subsidies. The announcement focused on a partnership model that pairs private operation with active downtown and municipal support to sustain the site.
Local business and cultural leaders described the theater as a longstanding downtown anchor whose reopening is expected to bring foot traffic back to nearby restaurants and shops. The theater’s abrupt closure had raised concerns about vacant storefronts and the viability of entertainment venues in downtown Salinas.
Maya Cinemas’ statement linked the closure to a decline in patronage compared with pre-pandemic levels. The company opened locations across the region in the ensuing years, including a Fresno site that opened in 2015 but has since closed as it prepares to hand operations to Galaxy Theatres, according to local reports.
City leaders emphasized that the effort to reopen the Salinas theater fits a broader strategy to revitalize downtown, making cultural venues more resilient by encouraging multiuse programming and improving public safety features such as lighting and garage security.
Details about programming schedules, ticketing, staffing and the timeline for security upgrades were not immediately available. Theater managers and city officials said they would provide additional information closer to the Oct. 9 reopening date.
The announced reopening signals a local attempt to adapt an entertainment venue to the changing economics of moviegoing while trying to preserve a community gathering place in the heart of downtown Salinas.
