Major engineering phase reached on Narrow Water Bridge over Newry River
Work on the €102m (£88m) Narrow Water Bridge reached a notable engineering milestone this week as temporary structures now extend 65 metres from each bank into the Newry River. The progress, led by main contractor BAM Ireland, gives for the first time a tangible sense of how the new crossing will sit across the water between Counties Down and Louth.
The temporary arrangements comprise a framework of driven piles — installed by Co Down firm Quinn Piling — capped with heavy-duty steel beams forming a fixed-span skid track supplied by Sarens. A central gap in the framework has been deliberately left to allow a delivery barge carrying the bridge sections to manoeuvre into position.

The completed crossing will feature a 138m cable-stayed deck, a 98.6m pylon and a 56m opening span across the navigable channel, the latter allowing boats to pass beneath the structure. The barge delivery from Belgium is expected at Warrenpoint Harbour in early 2027, with the heavy sections to be transported upriver when conditions permit.

The engineering approach now visible on site reflects bespoke methods developed for the complex tidal conditions of the Newry River.
Design work has been led by Belfast-based AM Consulting Engineers (AMCE), whose team have overseen the skid-track solution intended to transfer the heavy prefabricated elements safely from barge to final location. The use of on-river piling and heavy skidding operations highlights the technical difficulty of placing large pieces within a narrow, tidal channel.
Local observers and river users will in coming months see further activity as the barge arrives and the major sections are floated and manoeuvred into place. When weather and tides align, the operation will require careful co-ordination between the contractor, engineers and harbour authorities at Warrenpoint.
For Newry and the surrounding area, completion of the bridge is expected to transform local connectivity by providing a new route between Counties Down and Louth; the physical presence of the temporary structures underlines that the scheme has moved from preparatory phases into a critical period of heavy engineering works.
