Coimbatore, Sept — Stray dogs intervened to prevent an alleged sexual assault on a mentally ill woman on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Thursday, Thudiyalur police said. The incident, captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV), took place near NGGO Colony around 2 a.m..

Police said the CCTV footage was noticed while officers were examining recordings as part of an inquiry into an attempted arson at a petty shop in the area. The visuals reportedly showed a 17-year-old boy approaching the woman, who had been sitting outside a relative's house near a railway overbridge.
The footage, according to police, showed two stray dogs barking persistently as the suspect moved closer. When the teenager allegedly sought to overpower the woman, she raised an alarm. One of the dogs then attacked the youth, biting his legs a few times, after which he fled the scene. The dog continued to chase him away, the visuals indicated.
